UCSD bioengineering Vs. U of T Engineering Science

Hey guys,

I'd like some opinion...
I am an intl who got accepted into both the programs mentioned in the title.
At the moment I accepted offers from both unis, but its time for immigration and stuff..and i NEED to choose between the 2.

UofT:
- I got a Galbraith Scholarship and an entrance scholarship (this makes cost of attending U of T only HALF the coa of UCSD)
- Engineering Science offers around 7 options in 3rd and 4th year...and one of them is biomedical engineering. I am primarily interested in bioengineering (more of biological science than mech. engineering). And UofT has a bioengineering minor available to all engineering students. so it would be a biomed-bioengineering combination if i attend UofT
- I know a lot of ppl in U of T

UCSD:
- no scholarship (I am intl period)
- I've heard about the amazing bio-engineering program. God knows what is so amazing...
- Initially when i applied I though being surrounded by biotech clusters would be of some advantage ...when it comes to getting an internship, etc. I am not so sure now...coz of the recession n all. (yes, i am not very well informed)
- JOhn Muir college seems to be a perfect place for me.... because of the creative writing program and environmental science options.
- The biggest disappointment for me is that...being a non-resident, non-american citizen i m not elligible to apply to any of the summer programs ... :(
and its necessary for me to find something to do over the summer, coz i most probably wont be returning home every year.

I am open to any ideas/suggestions/opinions, so lets get this discussion going...
Thanks so much for ur time and thoughts guys!

U of T = University of Toronto, Canada

What do you mean by the summer programs? Do you mean summer sessions? Please elaborate…

UCSD’s BioE follows closely behind Johns Hopkins’s BioE program. I know you know it’s really good, thus you should come here :]

Summer programs – this for example : [UCSD Bioengineering - NSF REU Application](http://nsfreu.be.ucsd.edu/)

When you say ‘follows closely behind johns hopkins’ ’ …do u mean by reputation?
I am not really into that aspect…

Reputation is the result of a excellent program. The person is implying that UCSD programs, opportunity for internships, and job offers are inching closer to be as well as JHU. Reputation is simply the after result of having an awesome program, and UCSD HAS an awesome program!

The internships at UCSD is plentiful! Plus, Cali is a Biotech hot spot :)

as long as you’re an american citizen, you can apply to any nih/nsf reu in the us. it doesnt matter where you go to school. im going to unc-ch this summer. you may be able to get into a non-governmental reu in toronto if the school has extramural grants in a given year.

more information can always be found [US NSF - REU - Search for an REU Site](Search REU Sites | NSF - National Science Foundation)

@biopsychosocial
I am not an american citizen…and that is why I am concerned

My personal opinion is that you should choose Toronto. While both schools clearly have good BioE programs it seems you would gain closer connections with those at Toronto, all at a cheaper price and better convenience. It is also likely you’d keep more in touch with friends especially if you plan on living in Canada in the future.

R-DNA what bioengineering track are you?

PM me if you want an honest answer

Well at the moment i am in bIoengineering (biotechnology)
and i might switch to bioinformatics (just maybe…)

No No no, dont switch to Bioinformatics. Even the faculty at UCSD don’t like it that much hah. BTEC is a very good program and SD is the hub for Bioengineering. I would definitely recommend coming here over UT because you have a lot of chances of going into the industry.
I am a Bioengineering major and in my first year I have two research positions and an internship over the summer. Its pretty darn amazing.
