UCSD Econ or USC Business

I was admitted to UCSD for Economics as a transfer student and have already accepted the offer of admission to attend. However, I was also admitted to the USC Marshall School of Business but was admitted for Spring. I am very torn between the two schools. The cost of UCSD could be as much as $40,000 in total for two years. The cost of USC could be as much as $65,000 in total for two years (depends on my parents income this year). In addition to the financial aspect, I am mainly concerned about the academic aspect. I’ve heard UCSD econ can be fairly math intensive and I’m not that fond of math (although I’m good at it). I’m also worried that USC Business could be too intimidating as I am fairly shy and somewhat antisocial. Any advice?

USC Marshall all the way. Unless your planning to do graduate studies in Economics.

Maybe an MBA one day but nothing is set in stone.

I’d say Marshall as well.

Another vote for USC. What would you study at Marshall?

@arc918 I’m not sure. I really wasn’t expecting to get in to USC to be honest. Probably not accounting. Maybe entrepreneurship or something. Any votes for San Diego?

Well, where do you want to go?

I just think, considering you aren’t too into math, and USC Marshall will give you what will probably be a more versatile degree with great connections, I’d go with the latter. Do whatever you wish to do, though.

@goldenclub Both schools seem really great. My concerns for USC are the cost, not starting until spring, and if the social/academic atmosphere will suit me. I mainly just study and am not that interested in parties and socializing. For UCSD, I worry the academic atmosphere may be too cutthroat and if economics is something I really want to study. Tough decision.

USC seems like the better choice, judging from your concerns about both.

You’ll find lots of different people at whatever school you go to so don’t worry about that. Also, I don’t think academic atmosphere is going to be dramatically different. I went to UCSD these last two years and I applied for transfer to Cal, UCLA, and USC. Got in all 3, but decided to stay near home and go to Cal. Economics and Business Admin can both be diverse majors. Go where you think you can afford though however. Debt may not be worth it.

Honestly, I would work on your shyness and antisocial personality. That will probably determine your success at either schools.

UCSD has a top econ department. Will set you up well for grad school and jobs that value econ skills.

I heard that USC has a strong alumni network for business.

However, much of entrepreneurship is selling.

I think Econ major may not be cutthroat as other majors. But it’s a top notch program.
For business I like USC better.
