UCSD Jacobs Scholar vs. Yale

Hey everyone!

I'm currently a high school senior from Southern California who was recently very lucky enough to receive admissions from Yale University as well as the Jacobs School of Engineering at UC San Diego. The Jacobs School, however, is offering me a scholarship that covers full tuition and includes benefits such as priority course enrollment, a faculty mentor program, opportunities to conduct research right when I begin enrollment, and a whole load of professional development benefits.

I applied as a bioengineering major to both universities, but I'm actually quite undecided as to what I really want to study in college. For a long time, I've always planned on going to medical school, but I've recently been considering a lot of other potential careers in areas like finance, computer science, and biomedical engineering. As of now, I personally want to keep my options open but I also understand the importance of committing to a certain field as early as possible.

My purpose for this post was to ask any current UCSD students who may have been in a similar situation as me in the past. What led you to ultimately choose UCSD? Also, if you were also a Jacobs Scholar, what parts of the program do you feel are truly unattainable anywhere else?

I haven't visited either campus yet, but I do think that this will play a big part in my decision. For now, however, I would GREATLY appreciate any insight that you all may have. Thank you so much!

I am in the same situation right now and I am having trouble deciding whether to go high ranking school or choose UCSD. The main concern for me is GPA. What if cant keep this GPA. Anyone who can help us decide?

Ahh same situation. UCSD Bioengineering with scholarship or MIT with 120k debt. LOL. What did you guys end up choosing?

Also doesn’t the UCSD April 9 deadline violate student rights?:

“Colleges that request commitments to offers of admission and/or
financial assistance prior to May 1 must clearly offer you the op-
portunity to request (in writing) an extension until May 1. They must
grant you this extension and your request may not jeopardize your
status for admission and/or financial aid.”

I am thinking about accepting UCSD offer and I think its fair for them to ask to SIR by April 9th because this way they can offer this scholarship to other people who really wants to attend UCSD.

I see that angle, but it also prevents you from receiving all your financial aid offers

There exists an official Facebook group for this as well.

Can you post the link please!
