UCSD or University of Toronto

I've been accepted to UCSD computer science(Warren College) and to the university of Toronto(Trinity College) for Computer engineering.
I'm from India(Calcutta)or Kolkata.whichever you prefer.=P

Factors:
1) The academics. Which would provide the best Computer Science education? U of T is ahead in all the rankings i have seen, but not by much. UCSD normally places at around 15 and U of T at 10. But i'd still like to hear from students from both institutions if they are happy with what they are getting.

2) Internship opportunities: U of T provides the Professional experience year(PEY) program which consists of a 12-16 month paid professional internship. It's almost like a co-op and sounds like an excellent program(would provide great real world experience before entering the job market). Compared to this, what are the internship opportunities at UCSD?

3) What's the job scene like? UCSD is a growing tech hub so it shouldn't be too difficult to bag a good job provided i do well. But take into consideration that internationals have to go through the entire H1-B hassle after 1 year of work, while in canada, internationals can work up to 3 years after graduating without any special visa. But i've got no idea about the job scene in toronto or neighboring canadian cities.

3.5) Prestige: A few of you must have cringed at the sight of that word. haha
this is not a deciding factor but i'd still like to know.=P
Would a degree from toronto illicit a "wow" or at the very least a "cool" response?
And which of the two would be considered more prestigious?

4) and obviously since you only got to uni once(for undergrad at least), which place is more fun? The lively, cold city of toronto, or the laid back warmer So Cal?

I am leaning towards Toronto, but any arguments for or against this decision would be appreciated.
Decisions decisions...

Could some one please weigh in. I’m so confused!!!=(

Cool, I’m from Kolkata too! Where did you give the SATs?
Also,
1.I’m unsure about this aspect, a better reasearched individual may be able to give a better insight.

U of T wins hands down in this regard.

UCSD is better because of it’s proximity to Silicon Valley.

3.5. Students make up a school, not the other way round. Most people don’t even look where you studied after you finish your first job, so…

Hey!thanks for replying.
took my SAT’s in malaysia actually.been living here for a while now.entire family is back in kolkata though.

hey…I feel that you have sort of convinced yourself about UToronto…Go ahead :slight_smile: Maybe UCSD wasn’t really the place for you…I have buddies (and seniors) in both places and they are loving their time there( at both schools)…

AS FOR OPPORTUNITIES…america might get you farther but don’t let that hold you back especially If you want to go to Grad school :)

@quiverfox
honestly, the only reason i was neglecting UCSD was because i got rejected by UCLA(yea i was bitter)
but that time has passed and i’m using my brain to make decisions again.
Both places are amazing, and since i’m an international, both would be completely new experiences for me. +the inability to visit either place makes the decision harder.
Don’t think that i’m looking to go to grad school after undergrad. Probably get a few years of work experience first(3-7 years)
it’s nice to hear that your friends are enjoying themselves at both places.just shows that I can’t go wrong by choosing either place.

@quiverfox
I could always apply to america for a job right?or does that rarely happen?

If you want experience…I suggest that you go to UCSD…its a waay better campus too (looks hot ;))

that way you are always close to Silicon valley, beautiful weather…anyplace outside america…including Canada…you are still an INTERNATIONAL…I mean tougher competition for lesser spots!!

@quiverfox
what do you mean by experience?

OK…so we are looking at schools and have lived in San Diego for 3 years and of course UCSD is a natural option. We’ve lived in the Northwest and are used to seasons… so keep that in mind.

UCSD is one of the most UNATTRACTIVE universities I have ever seen. It is concrete and dead / dry brush. Very little green. It has a cool library that photographs well, but when you actually get close, it’s a bit creepy.

UCSD is an asian mecca. Nothing against asians, but even our asian friends joke calling it UCAsianD.

UCSD is not EASY to get into it, but it isn’t “prestigious”.

San Diego is nowhere NEAR silicon valley. It may seem like it… but the grass is always greener. India has a massive reputation for turning out amazing people in the computer sciences - and well “foreign” is almost always more alluring than “homegrown” so… a silicon valley co. will probably be more interested in someone from India that studied in Toronto than an American who went to UCSD. Sorry to step in EVERY politically incorrect mud puddle - just being blunt.

San Diego is not LA. I thought San Diego was going to be all sun and hot people and beaches. Truth is, once you move here the main freeway runs parallel to the Ocean and you’ll want to get from place to place quickly and never take the coast highway. When I first moved here, I was at the beach EVERY day. After about 2 months, I found myself going a whole month without getting to the beach (and I live only 1.5 miles away from it).

Choose Univ of T for education and prestige. Choose UCSD if you are very athletic, outdoorsy and love water sports (surfing). Also Toronto has great transportation and San Diego is sooooo big that you MUST drive everywhere.

my $0.02

@Emtou2u
would silicon valley co. hire someone from india who went to UCSD?haha?

That’s really clear :slight_smile: Helped make my choice against UCSD anyways…Emtou2u

Hey loneranger31, but listen up…ask somebody about UToronto also. Maybe some people have problems with that too!!

But in general…both are great schools :)
