UCSD over Cal?

I've been accepted to Cal and UCSD for Mechanical Engineering and I wondering what's better at UCSD?

I think it depends on what type of person you are. If you want a more laid back environment and want to be one of the better students in ur program, SD would be the way to go. If u thrive in a very competitive atomsphere then cal. but honestly, the prestige that comes with Berkeley will probably sway ur decision

less competition, probably easier to get good grades...and definitely a lot more laid-back. if you don't like cal's urban atmosphere then go to SD. it's not that uncommon to make that decision too, there are tons of cases where people pick SD over Berk, just so you know. BTW Berk's M.E. program is Top 5, but UCSD's is Top 20 (for graduate).

HAHAHA this was me a year ago... thats how i found this site!! anyways well obviously i got ucsd now... but there are times where i find myself wondering about cal... but then i think if all the stuff i love about ucsd ...

seriously it all depends on where you want to be and what type of environment you like better...i would take ucsd laidback beachy environment compared the the city... but thats just me =D

chose ucsd for professors (i was told that cal professors only care about their research, don't care about undergrads at all), good bio, laid back atmosphere (although there is quite a bit of competition), nice weather, lack of strong sports program (heh.), far away from parents (we rarely get into fights now)...plus i was more excited about ucsd for some gut reason than cal. i felt like the only reason i'd go to cal was to be with friends or for the prestige.

I agree that Cal has professors that care for their research more than undergrads. As a public research university, UCSD has this problem too.

bump bumppp

look just ask yourself this: are u a type of person who can take on a crueling, cut throat and competition filled environment? if you can, dealing with those types of ppl in ur classrooms might be worth the prestige and aid you'll get in finding a job. However, if you are someone who is more relaxed and wants a more laid back environment, UCSD will be the place for you. Some look at college for simply an education/name recognition. others for the experience/learning. ask yourself what type of perosn yo uare

Barring any special circumstances, I would choose Cal over UCSD.

I'm going to visit both admit days to see what's up. Thank you all for your imput.
