UCSD over others?

Hey there, I’m a freshman entering in Muir College. Comin from Chico, CA.

I was wondering, did anyone out there choose UCSD over a “better” college like Berkeley or an Ivy or something? What drew you to UCSD?

I myself passed up Berkeley and Cornell. Conell was too isolated and far away, and I think Berkeley’s possibly violent environment drew me away from there. Though they do have an awesome marching band.

Also, it looks like San Diego’s on it’s way up academically, and the weather is so nice.

Any thoughts, anyone else in the same boat as me?

good choice. but if i was in your shoes i would go to cornell or berkeley in a heartbeat... i mean don't you know how hard it is to get into those schools?

Berkeley is violent?

if i were you i would have picked cornell, b/c the name is worth more regardless of how you would have done there.

but then again, if your majoring in biology UCSD is probably one of the top schools, but imo its not better than cornell

Hobos can be violent.

I passed on berkeley for ucsd, but only after berkeley passed on me first.

^^^^^^^^^
rofl

I mostly mean hobos and the urban environment as being "violent." But what led you to pick UCSD over another? Did anyone else around here pass up a bigger name? (That didn't pass on you first lol.) I'm seriously considering transferring soon.

I know someone that passed on Berkeley for junior college, she got one of those pre-acceptance letters but didnt sign it, but that was just stupidity b/c now she has no chance of getting in :)

Go to berkeley.

Jasonian, relax. UCSD is a great school. You're right near fantastic beaches and you will experience weather that can't be beat.

Consider transferring? Have you checked out any of the international rankings lately? SJTU and THES?

is ucsd underrated even amongst its own students?

Well I don't know whether UIUC is considered better than UCSD, it is certainly better ranked, as is UT Austin.
I passed on both of those for UCSD. Does that count? Well my choice was mainly based on my major anyway.
Well, I also think that UCSD is REALLY on its way up academically, and San diego sounds great. I'm from India, doing Bioengineering, will be entering Muir this Fall too, and I'm not considering transfering..
and I wouldn't underrate UCSD, it was one of my first choices from the start.

Actually UCSD is ranked #35. UIUC #37 and UT Austin #46.

For fun...

SJTU (2004, can't find 2005):
UCSD 13th, UIUC 25th, UT Austin 40th

THES 2005:
UT Austin 15th, UCSD 24th, "illinois university" (???) 35th

I hate rankings.

Well, i guess it doesn't count anyway, and I hate rankings too.

Berkeley is probably about as "violent" as USC. And I haven't heard of anyone in Berkeley or USC being attacked in anyway. And USC is in a pretty horrible place. You pretty much can't live anywhere too far away from the campus (like 5 miles max).

I don't know about the whole Berkeley is violent thing. Perhaps in the Buddhist sense, somewhat, yes.

About USC- Berkeley is in a very different neighborhood, and USC's "bad" neighborhood is overblown.

Hey Jasonian,

I am an incoming freshman at UCSD this fall.

You wanted to know if there are others like you who gave up "better"
schools for UCSD.

I gave up Regents scholarships at UCB, UCLA, and UCD (received the
Alumni at UCD) to attend UCSD. I also turned down USC (with
scholarship), Northwestern, Boston U's accel med program, and Wellesley amont others....all for UCSD.

I don't consider any of the schools I turned down as "better." My top
three choices were: UCB (turned down because of its inherent cut-throat competition among the students), BU's med program
(turned down because the east coast seemed too far), and UCSD. UCSD is world reknowned for its biomedical engineering as well as its biological sciences programs. I am interested in human
biology, thus one of my decisions to attend UCSD, which is one of the
leading research universities in the world.

My friend gave up Stanford for UCSD and I know of another person who
gave up Stanford and Brown for UCSD.

Hope this helps!

Good luck to you.

Alright. I knew there had to be other ppl out there. qtpie, which college are you in? The East Coast is really far.

qtpie, how can you qualify that Berkeley has "inherent cut-throat competition among the students," whereas the others schools you mentioned do not?

As to "giving up" schools, I turned down Carnegie Mellon for UCSD...dunno how fair this is in context of rankings since the engineering schools are pretty closely ranked...

i gave up the U. of Wisconsin - Madison honors program to be a plain little nobody at UCSD. lol I think it was worth it, i suppose. not much of a partier, but i do like to have fun, and sometimes it's really lacking at ucsd.
