OK I've decided that I'm just going to do physics, and I'll think about the math later on. I won't do engineering. Also, I got into both UCSD and UCLA so I have to choose between those two

I have a few questions:
I heard that the apartments near UCSD are really expensive, is that true?
I want to have a better social life and interact with more people, but I don't want to party/drink. Also, academics still are my first priority. Is UCSD right for me? I heard that UCSD may be too boring?

If you dont want to party/drink (like me) i think ucsd would be good for you since they have a good amount of academic and non-academy clubs for the social life aspect. Also it is true that la jolla is not cheap, but reasonable apartments can be found, but also i dont see la jolla being any more expensive than westwood (if someone knows otherwise let me know).

The apartments around the school are not that expensive... not much more than Westwood would be anyway... And the neighbouring cities could get even cheaper. La Jolla is only expensive if you go away from the school. Remember, La Jolla is the most expensive place to live in California. But the people who run the apartments aren't stupid... they cater to college students for heaven's sakes. I have seen rent range from 1400ish to over 2K, which isn't that bad at all if you have a roommate or two.

The apartments around UCSD (University City between UCSD and UTC) are cheaper and nicer than those around UCLA (Westwood) IMO and I currently have a daughter living in one (by UCSD).

If you put 4 people in a 2 br nice apartment it'll be less expensive than the res hall and you'd have a living room and kitchen as well. Check out the apartments on Regents road - Costa Verde, Regents Court, La Regencia, etc. This area is served by the campus shuttle and the city bus so it's easy to get back and forth to campus without having to drive and pay for parking. There'll be many other UCSD students living in these complexes.

My apartment in Costa Verde is two master bedrooms (both 12'x15') one with a private bathroom, and both with two walk in-closets, and a 12'x10' loft and a second bathroom and costs $1800 a month. My two roommates and I split rent (Loft=$500; Master w/o bath=$600; Master w/ bath [mine]=$700). Utilities (gas+electricity, internet, and cable) run about $30-40 per person each month and food costs really depend on whether or not we decide to eat out a lot or if I feel like cooking for my apartmentmates and girlfriend. Each master can easily accomodate two people and even the smaller loft can fit two twin beds easily. So whether you want your own room

Also, if you look in places like La Regencia, you can probably find something similar for even cheaper, too.

i wish i couldve gotten to this thread a little earlier, but i suppose newton and i are in a similar predicament. After doing careful research, ive found that after transfer, it is not hard at all to switch into engineering (except for bioengineering and CS) as long as you have the prereqs done. And this can be done before fall quarter. Your major doesnt depend on your college.

UCLA is a different story though, because its tough to switch between colleges. Each one has their own admission requirements. So, naturally, it'd be difficult to switch from letters and sciences to engineering. And this change cant be made until the end of fall quarter of enrollment.

Parking at UCI is an issue; parking permits are expensive (though not as expensive as living on campus) and parking is hard to find. Keep that in mind if you decide to be a commuter.

I've actually heard the apartments in the LA areas are more expensive, but don't know exactly how much they are. As for in La Jolla, it's quite easy to find housing for $400-$500/month if you're sharing.

I know this is a UCSD forum, but ... go to UCLA.

i think the latest one was Veronica Mars when they started blocking a part of warren campus, that was pretty funny. Although i prefer they not do that, with the construction and that there's no place left to walk. haha.

ucsd is the school for me its up and comming and making a name it gained 8 spots in the ranking this year and ucla droped (for engineering) ucsd is now better the ucla for engineering…

plus ITS THE BEST SCHOOL ON THE WORLD !!!
ok personal opinion…
ucsd = sexy sexy smart
ucla…so 1976-98
