Medical scholar is an admission to USCD Medical school after undergraduating without taking MCAT. Need to have 3.5 on pre-med classes and min GPA 3.5

What's their MCAT requirement?

If you're sure you want to be a doctor, go to UCSD. Excellent weather, excellent medical school, excellent cost. Not to rag on Duke or anything, but this should be an easy choice.

from a pre-med loving it here at Duke, go with UCSD

there is no MCAT at all for UCSD Medical school,
but you are free to apply to another Medical schools if you want, and obviously have to take MCAT

take the ucsd deal it is hard to get the medical scholar

I absolutely agree - UCSD medical scholar hands down, you can forget about all the stress us premed Dukies are going through ;)

I can't do it. I've spent the past several days trying to come up with reasons to drag this kid to Duke. I can't do it.

I mean, sure, there are a lot of advantages we can provide: a small undergraduate experience with professors who will really invest a lot of time and energy into you. But in the end, I can't honestly tell you you're better off coming here overall. UCSD sounds like a great place.

I will caution you, however, that while their med school is very well regarded, their curriculum is a bit on the strict side, making actual medical school study there relatively stressful. Consider this carefully, since Duke will probably improve your odds at getting into another medical school while (obviously) lowering your odds (we can't beat 100%, after all) at getting into medical school at all.

And, of course, I have the good sense to tell you this after your deadline has passed.

Is it past the deadline now? LOL - yeah - if you are a definite pre-med, it is awfully tough to pass up having a place as great at UCSD as a guaranteed "safety" school :)

I'm from San Diego, and if I were a pre-med, I think that would be a sweet enough deal to endure the campus environment for 4 years. There isn't nearly the same "feel" as Duke, thus a very different undergraduate experience. It's very decentralized with little or no spirit - a lot of my friends chose it for that reason. However, as I would love to go to Duke over going to UCSD, that doesn't mean someone who is pre-med wouldn't take assurance of UCSD medical school over going to Duke. And my primary care physician is at UCSD medical....awesome facilities (though I'm only an expert on the clinics and the brand new cancer center they built...the appearance, not that I have cancer http://cancer.ucsd.edu/ONcLINE/transitions/Photo_Gallery.asp )

hi, i currently am a student in the med scholars program. trust me, this is the best med program you can get into. ucsd is one of the top notch med schools (not to mention hottest for science) and the opportunity to bypass countless hours and stress studying for mcats, doing research, community service, letters of recommendation, keeping an almost 4.0 gpa, etc...is the best thing out there. honestly, this question is a bit ridiculous...duke pre-med vs. ucsd med scholar...hahaha....funny

Okay, now I'm tempted to recommend Duke, thanks to Nathan here.

But I'll refrain, under the assumption that most of the scholars there aren't... well, obnoxious.

sorry if i came across as obnoxious...but there are waaaaaay too many people who would give an arm and a leg to not have to go through the stress for applying to med school...i'm juss stating the facts....no hard feelings, duke is an awesome school, but a straight med program vs. a pre-med...yeaaah

I have to agree with bluedevilmike on one thing:

UCSD has a reputation for being med school hell.

haha Is this the place to say that I turned down Rice/Baylor to come to Duke??

I couldn't sacrifice my undergraduate studies. I'll chalk it up to a learning experience.

what do you mean by med school hell?

UCSD has, from what I hear from med students, one of the hardest curricula of all American medical schools.

mmhmm and the competition there is brutual. I have heard some stories of how ruthlessly competitive some medical students there are.

Again, though, to be guaranteed a spot in a top-15 (if I'm not mistaken) medical school is a pretty sweet deal.
