Hello everyone.

I'm a new UCSD incoming transfer, and I was wondering if moving towards SDSU is a smart idea.

La Jolla I know is pricy, and UTV isnt the cheapest place either. If I live near SDSU, I found some single shared apartments for around 700$~/month. I also found a couple of shared rooms for ~500$ too. I already have a car, and my dad has a contract with a nearby Shell gas company to get cheaper gas, so transportation cost wouldn't be a problem.

I guess the only problem is that SDSU is known to be a party school and if unlucky I might end up with a bonehead drunk 18 year old...

Also, I get financial aid from UCSD (20k in grants, 5k in loans) however that is an estimate of an on house campus aid. I heard that the money will be lowered if I go off campus...

Any advice about this?

SDSU is not close to UCSD by any means. If you’re prepared to drive an hour each day and pay $200 for a parking permit go for it but you’ve been warned. Traffic doesn’t help either and can add to your commute time as can looking for parking on campus which can be difficult.

Also, just so you know, if you’re willing to live with other students you should be able to find a single room in a 2 or 3 bedroom apartment for comparable prices $500-800 in the La Jolla / UTC area. If you can’t or don’t want to live in this area there are much closer communities where students live than all the way over by SDSU. I’d look at Pacific Beach, Clairemont, Mira Mesa and some of the other surrounding areas first.

I’m not sure if you’ve commuted 30 mins each way to school before but it can really be a pain. I used to do the same for community college and am glad to be past having to do it. It really does take up a lot of waste time that you could be devoted to studying or something else significant when time can be scarce during the quarter.
