UCSD Thurgood Marshall & Biochemistry

I’ve been admitted to UCSD Biochemistry/Chemistry to Thurgood Marshall college. I must confess that I don’t know how the colleges impact one’s major. I thought that the colleges were merely for dorm purposes and sports. I think TM is primarily for those who believe in service to others. Are there specific breath requirements for students in each college? I read in another post how some colleges are for science students and others for those in humanities. Please could someone help me understand this?

I graduated from UCSD Muir College in Biology many years ago. At that time there were four colleges, three of which had names. I chose Muir because I worked full time through college and it was the most flexible at the time.

The idea at UCSD is that each college has its own personality, its own physical space and its own GE and Humanities requirements. You can check the website for in-depth discussion. Revelle has the rep for hard core science and a rigorous Humanities program, Warren for engineering, etc. AFAIK, you can do just about any major through any of the colleges. Now they admit to a particular college. A friend’s daughter is at Eleanor Roosevelt. She’s a ChemE major. She is feeling very bummed about what she views as excessive non-major GE requirements and now wishes she were in a different college. YMMV of course.

Thanks PadreDreTres for taking the time to respond. Is it possible to request a change of college from Thurgood Marshall to Revelle?

Usually the only way you can change colleges is if you can prove that due to the GE of requirements in Thurgood Marshall, you will not be able to graduate on time or find someone willing to trade with you.

TM GE requirement is not heavy like Revelle’s. Revelle requires more humanities classes (5 vs 2).

Some TM dorms are newer.

TG and Revelle are at the opposite ends of the campus.

The GE requirements and the dorms are the only thing different about the colleges. However, for Marshall there are typically overflow into Muir. Meaning some Marshall students end up living in Muir (typically the last few to SIR and/or sign up for housing).

Congratulations on your acceptance to Marshall College! The colleges are definitely about more than where you live (although that is a part of it). In addition to setting your GE and writing requirements, the colleges give you a chance to have a small college experience while enjoying the benefits of a large research institution. Most of the colleges also have specific programs and events that are intended to help students get involved, build community, and excel academically. For example, Marshall (and several other of the colleges) has research grants for undergraduates, student organizations specific to the college, and a faculty mentorship program. And all of the colleges have active honors programs. Marshall’s GE requirements are generally considered to be the second most flexible (after Muir). It’s pretty difficult, or maybe impossible to switch colleges, but it’s definitely possible to do any major at any college!
