UCSD/UCLA/Cal/Johns Hopkins U

Which would would you pick for a bioengineering major?

JHU - no financial aid, (ranked #1 for bioengineering), really far from home
UCLA - Dean's Scholarship ($8,300 a year)
UC Berkeley - well known for engineering school
UCSD - bioengineering (ranked #2 for bioengineering)

if you’re 110% sure on doing bioengineering, obviously go to JHU. If you’re only 90% sure, I’d say go to Berkeley, then LA/SD.

I might change to molecular bio or business if BioE gets too tough…

What are the costs of each?

I’m sure you can figure out the relative pros and cons of each place. But I don’t know how much thought you’ve put into the financial aid problem.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from reading CC, it is that school loans will haunt you for years… especially if you went to an ivy league school like JHU, which costs something like 30k/year. I’ve heard story after story of people who are in their 40s, still paying off school loans. They start their adult lives in such huge debt that they’re restricted into taking the first high salary job that comes their way, even if they hate it. And it just gets worse from there.
Unless you have some way to pay for school without taking loans, I would choose UCSD over JHU (for bioengineering - not bioe: premed btw).
By the way, if you’re looking to be a doctor JHU or UCLA have far better reputations as premed factories. And the debt problem is not as big a deal because medical school debt is huge regardless… you’d be in the hole anyway.

UCB is by far the best on the list for engineering *other than bioengineering, but you don’t seem to be interested in any other engineering.

Overall, if you are dead set on bioe and you aren’t going to change your mind, and you need loans go to UCSD (which is a GREAT DEAL - financially speaking). If you’re looking to be a doctor JHU is your best option followed by UCLA.

as a prospective triton… you got in ucla, berkerley and JHU and you thinking about ucsd? get out of here -______- a smart guy/gal like you who got into these school should know better. I have the real dilehma…private or public. Fordham or UCSD.

JHU if ur very sure of your major choice

I wouldn’t call UCLA a premed factory. It has lower med school acceptance rate than Berkeley. The fact is both UCLA and Berkeley suck at premed.

who on earth called UCLA a premed factory…? O_o

Bioengineering…

IMO
1)JHU
2)UCSD
3)Berkeley
4)UCLA

hanauma, I’m not sure if I agree that the choice so clear cut. I got into JHU (BioE) and Berkeley, but I still chose to come to UCSD because it was cheapest.

Is Berkeley good for biology (not pre-med)?

Yes…

Pokemon23,
I would go to JHU for undergraduate and then MIT for Ph. D. Then do a postdoc at Berkeley. Between these activities try to pick up as many friends as you can–and your life is all set

UCSd has best programs for Bio really. But JHU is incredibly well known for being an outstanding medical school!

Berkeley for engineering, and UCLA is pretty much a pre-med factory since it has the most pre-med in the nation!

^ Do you have the stats to prove it?

I second OoPurestOo & ChristianWu’s posts.

UCSD is KNOWN for their amazing BioE program.
My friend who’s pursuing BioE here at SD chose it over Berkeley & UCLA BioE programs, because SD science & engineering programs are really good, perhaps equal to or better than Berkeley/LA’s.

UCB should not be high on your list, as their bioe program is extremely new. UCSD should definitely be at or near the top, however.
