I got accepted to UCSD and Georgia Tech and am unable to decide between the two.
I got accepted for Engineering Undeclared at GT (which is what I applied for)
At UCSD, I applied for Bioengineering but because it is hugely impacted I was accepted as undeclared in their engineering school. (I was accepted into Muir)
I want to study either Biomedical or Mechanical Engineering; I haven’t made up my mind yet.
I honestly do not know how to decide where to go.
Is it difficult to get into Bioengineering after a year at UCSD? Am I taking a big risk by waiting till sophomore year to find out if I can get into my preferred major?
Undeclared at UCSD means that you do not have a major and that you will have to apply to a major by the end of your second year. For all the “impacted” majors such as most ENG and CS, you will find the transfer to be difficult but not impossible. Your academic standing at the time you request a major will be the primary factor in determining whether you get that major or not. That means you will have to 1) take the pre-req classes for the major 2) get mostly A’s in those classes and 3) hope there is space when you apply. For some this path is no issue, for others the extra stress and uncertainty is not acceptable.
At GATech, the expectation is that most change majors once they join the school. It is a tech school, so moving majors around is not an issue (as I have been told) and quite normal. What pre-reqs you take will affect your path and possibly length of schooling, but no issue with actually switching majors.
That’s true @CAparent1. My D2 is a Freshman at GTech for ChemE. One of the reasons she chose GTech over UCB was the difficulty to change from UCB’s College of Chemistry to COE, in case she had a change of mind regarding her specialization. Quite a few of her batchmates at GTech are already contemplating changing from BME to other streams, a fairly straightforward process as long as the pre-reqs are met.
