UCSD is better in Math. Plus, for quant based jobs, going to the more "prestigious" school is better.

UCSD is a prestigious university, why would anyone want to go to UCI??

UCI is not in the middle of nowhere…
you’re right smack in the middle of the OC (fairgrounds, southcoast, disneyland, spectrum, …) and the beach is right there in newport… i think irvine has some of the best (but overpriced) food i’ve been to…

i’ve never been to SD

i got into both irvine and sd when i was applying for schools. im white, and all of my asian and indian friends were like screaming at me that it was no contest- SD!!! hahaha…

i chose irvine because they have a separate school for computer science (separate from the engineering department), and offer more courses and majors for information technology.

in terms of sciences, both are very highly rated research-oriented schools. i have heard from many people in the industry that either of them are looked at as prestigious, and i think it is quite near-sighted to think that employers will simply take one name over another. many people treat their educations differently, professors differ, classes differ, curriculum differs, and it doesn’t make much sense to simply say that because one went to a certain school deems that their education was better in every way or in any way.

also- about the campuses, i visited both of them when making my decision. both are beautiful, both are clean, both have nice surrounding areas. to say that irvine is in the middle of nowhere is the most idiotic things i have heard. it’s actually in the middle of A LOT. all of the surrounding area (OC), long beach area, LA… there is plenty to do and go see. simply-put college students are lazy if they can’t find stuff to do. besides, sans the beach, you have to have a car to do anything or go anywhere at SD.

both schools are very good, im tired of people saying or thinking that ratings are everything. that sounds like a very sad way to make decisions in life. i researched both campuses, visited both campuses, and talked to staff(spoke personally with each of the deans of the schools i was admitted to) and students on both campuses. that is really the only way to make a well-educated decision about something as important as your education.

and yes, both are EXTREMELY ASIAN. v rofl

the antepenultimate post is TWO YEARS OLD!!!

note: for those rusty in latin or greek grammar, antepenultimate means “two before the last”. Penultimate means “next to last”, which is often misused as though it meant ‘Really ultimate!!!’

I normally would opt for fall, but UCSD is too good a school to pass up to go to UCI.

I agree with Jace. I researched both schools, visited, and talked to professors and undergraduate advisors from both schools.

I am a prospective computer science major for both UCI and UCSD.

As for location, UCSD is near the beach which is okay, but UCI is located next to the beach as well. As for academics, UCSD and UCI both have smart and not so smart people, it is just that UCSD is more selective than UCI so you have more competition for UCSD. I live in LA so UCI is closer to me as opposed to UCSD.

I really like how UCI has its own school for Computer Science (Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences). The hall for Bren School was built in 2007 so it is relatively new and very nice-looking. The campus at UCI is relatively small compared to UCSD, as you need transit buses to travel around UCSD.

However, UCSD definitely has the edge when it comes to giving you internships and job opportunities because of the research opportunities offered. I like how the Calitech2 center and the SDSC (San Diego Super Computer) are both in UCSD so you have two world-class research facilities at UCSD. Plus, UCSD has a lot of funding when it comes to research. They take research very seriously.

UCI’s campus life seems more lively as opposed to UCSD. When I visited UCSD, the campus and student life just didn’t seem to be there and the campus seemed dull, as opposed to more friendly people at UCI. But that could just be me.

As of right now, I am leaning towards UCI just because it has its own CS school, the location, the vibrant student life, and the less than stellar than UCSD but great job and internship opportunities.
