UEdinburgh or UCL for a degree in mathematics with Economics

Hi all,

First of I want to say thank you to everyone on this sub who helped me during the UK application process. Your advices were very helpful.

I’ve received decisions from all my schools and am now torn between UEdinburgh and UCL for a degree in Mathematics with Economics.

I was wondering which one would be better in terms of actual education and recognition, keeping in mind that I am planning to do a masters in Economics at an American school later on.

Thanks

Congratulations!!

In terms of name, imo there is not a meaningful difference in terms of recognition by grad schools, so either will be fine. Take a closer look at the coursework at each program, to see which aligns best with your particular interests. Either will put you in a good position for UK internships.

Isn’t three vs four years a big difference to consider? Having said that I wouldn’t assume that you will learn more math and econ in a four year course, so saving time and money (even if London is more expensive in terms of living expenses) might be a decisive factor.

Yes, look at what you will study. No meaningful difference in reputation. London and Edinburgh are pretty different cities (and the length is different), so concentrate on the differences that matter.

Cost of living in London will be higher than Edinburgh. Edinburgh is a much more student friendly city than London which is very hit and miss in terms of student experience.

Mine was excited for London but flats are $, as is food, transportation, etc so she chose Durham & loves it. She was accepted at Edinburgh, her 1st choice but it’s 4 yrs in Scotland, just 3 in England so saves a yr tuition. You can’t go wrong with the choice you have!

I’d pick Edinburgh for an easier integration of Maths& Economics+ friendlier city for students (in terms of costs, transportation, and fun).

My DD had the same choice to make, albeit for a different subject. She will be a senior next year at Edi! It is a wonderful uni, people really bend over backwards to make students happy. Edi is one the best cities in Europe to live in, travel from and just make a life for yourself for 4 years. Math will be very fast-paced, but you will have a lot of contact time with faculty. Congrats on your offers!

^ And just going off hearsay, but UCL’s reputation is the opposite.
