Let me take the time, because i think you need it:

Machen says: We don’t have enough money to remain a high quality system for very long (while being asked specifically about UF, but anyway I will indulge you…)

UF is part of the state university system (isn’t it ?) Soooooo…BECAUSE the system does not have enough money to remain a high quality system for very long, THEN, UF will not have enough money to remain a high quality university for very long and THEREFORE will likely drop in the rankings.

But don’t worry that much. We are all sure the party rankings will remain on top, just like during the last 15 years.

“Let’s drop those delusions of grandeur at a time where they are not going to happen.”

Drop the ‘us’ in that statement. I doubt anyone on this forum that has given a heartfelt and statistically supported opinion WITHOUT an agenda would resent being included with the likes of someone who stalks a college’s forum looking for a place to be negative

I found some data that shows how much each state is contributing towards higher education on a per student basis.
I will try to post soon.
Again that category “per student spending” is worth 10% in the USNWR rankings.

I have resorted the fifteen (15) USNWR ranking criteria from the highest value subcategories (Peer review @ 25%) down to (% of full time faculty @ 1%)

There seems to be a lot misinformation about how important certain subsections really are.

USNWR SCORING CRITERIA Subsections
1- Peer Assesment / 25%
2- 6 yr graduaton rate / 16%
3- Per student spending / 10%
4- SAT / ACT scores / 8%
5- Faculty Salary / 7%
6- Classes fewer than 20 / 6%
7-Top 10% students / 6%
8- Actual vs Predicted graduation / 5%
9- % of alumni who contributed / 5%
10- freshman retention rate / 4%
11- Professors with highest degree / 3%
12- Classes of more than 50 / 2%
13- Acceptance rate / 2%
14- Student Faculty ratio / 1%
15- Percent of full time faculty / 1%

yup, 25%. Supposedly it is being changed.
By the way FSU in the '07 rankings was a 3.1 out of 5.
Tough hole to climb out of the way the %'s are skewed.

From the article:
"The magazine also has just sent out this year’s survey to college presidents asking them to rank institutions. This year’s survey also includes additional questions:

Presidents will be asked to name up to 10 colleges they think are “up and coming.” Morse said that this is a response to complaints that the magazine’s reputational survey — among the most controversial parts of the rankings — is slow to respond to improvements by colleges.
Presidents will be asked for advice on changes the magazine should consider in its methodology.
Presidents will be given a list of possible additional categories on which colleges could be ranked, and which could be used in the methodology for best colleges. These items include: ethnic diversity, admission yield, economic diversity, total endowment per student, learning outcomes, job placement data, and spending efficiency.
Morse said that the magazine has not decided whether it will release information on what the presidents say.

Why consider all these changes? Morse said that the effort was “partly in response” to the criticism of college presidents, some of whom have pledged not to fill out the magazine’s surveys any more. But more broadly, Morse said that “we want to make what we are doing better.”

After reading the full article, I would’nt expect much to change.
