THE GATORS ARE RANKED SIXTH IN THE NATION.

When UF won back-to-back national titles on the floor of the Georgia Dome last April, it became the first program to hold the men's basketball and football titles in the same academic year.

This feat, coupled with the success of Gators in all athletic fields, has led the program to receive some extra recognition.

The UF Athletics Program finished sixth in the 2006-07 Sports Academy Directors' Cup competition, marking UF's 24th consecutive top-10 finish.

"Titles by both men's basketball and football certainly led the highlights of this season for the Gators," Athletics Director Jeremy Foley said. "A total of 11 teams among the top 10 showed the strong performances by several of our teams."

Among the Gators 11 top-10 squads, five finished in the top five. Among them were the No. 1 football and men's basketball teams, the third-ranked gymnastics squad, No. 4 men's swimming and diving team and No. 5 women's tennis.

UF was just one team short of its own record of 12, set back in the 1992-93 and 2001-02 seasons.

The Gators led the Southeastern Conference with six titles in a season where 142 UF athletes earned All-American honors.

Individually, Gator freshman Gemma Spofforth won the 200-yard backstroke to earn a personal title for the UF women's swimming program.

"Our coaches and student athletes continue to work hard to place Florida among the nation's top athletics programs," Foley said. "Unquestionably, this was a memorable year. Our coaches and student athletes are working to add more positive memories for next season."

Another highlight in UF's 2006-07 campaign was the more than 1 million fans who attended 153 home events. Four UF teams ranked among the nation's top 10 in attendance.

Success wasn't limited to just the field. Three different Gators were named SEC Scholar-Athletes of the Year for their sport.

The national all-sports competition award is presented annually by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), United States Sports Academy and USA Today.

Stanford won its 13th consecutive Directors' Cup title with 1,429 points.
