Uhm. What shoud I be doing over the summer?

In terms of getting ready for applying to colleges. I have all my visits planned out, and my list in tact. Should I be writing my essays now? Filling out the common app?

I'm not quite sure how to move on. Listening to my parents would leave me with all this work to do in a week or two before deadlines...

The common application won’t be up until Aug. 1. The sample topics are up now but who knows if they will change. Some colleges that have their own applications do have them up now.

You should be doing some summer programs, research, or meaningful traveling.

Worry about visits later (in December or something) and essays towards the end of the summer.

Start on the essays. If you don’t know why you’d pick any school in particular, which is a common essay topic for the college supplements, just get to work on your common app essay. If you start now you’ll have plenty of time to work on it when you aren’t too stressed out with school.

Lol. You should probably have some productive activity over the summer instead of just chilling. Get ready for applications but also make sure your doing something that shows your not wasting the summer. Get a job, do research, or volunteer.

One such “something” would be brushing up on proper grammar.

I think you should do nothing over the summer.
Just sleep, watch tv, play video games, and
waste time on the internet. Thats what I do.

^ Sounds about right. Maybe go party a bit, do something illegal. You know, the usual.

I believe cage-fighting old people in the park would qualify for the above illegal statement. Might be included the whole “party” bit as well.

Seriously, just hang out with your friends and do some traveling. If that involves doing the occasional school visit, so be it, but just have fun.

In only a few years you’ll have the chance to work through your summers like a responsible adult.

Just take a vacation, have 1 experience, and make it as big a deal as possible to colleges.

1.) Make college list
2.) Common App Essay
3.) Write resume to remember the stuff you did
4.) Supplements

does that cover it?

I would procrastinate less if the CommonApp had come out last week. I needed that motivation!

Even if you don’t start your application/essays, you should at least think of an idea. What makes you stand out?

And you really should start much sooner than 1-2 weeks before the deadline…

Write essays write essays! So many people promise themselves that they’ll do it over the summer, and then only about 5 people do, and they can just lord it over their friends for months. (“What are you doing this weekend? Writing about an influential person in your life? That’s nice because I am going to sleep for 12 hours straight and then maybe go see your favorite band which is playing Saturday night and you don’t have time to go. Hey, I’ll buy you a shirt!”)

Start filling out the Common App and adding all of the colleges and filling out all the personal info. You can get all the tedious info like your address etc out of the way now and then fill in the essays later. Think of essay topics and maybe come up with an outline if you want. Look in to scholarships and stuff if you will need money for college. Maybe even contact teachers for recommendations if you want to apply ED.

DEFINITELY start writing essays, it is not fun to be stuck with a looming deadline and five or more to write. With all the stress involved in senior year, getting your essays out of the way will help a lot.

Do some soul-searching. Honestly, besides doing summer programs and whatnot, try to keep urself motivated and really try to understand your ambitions and yourself in general. I found that once I applied, I knew very little about myself such as why I even wanted to do what I was aiming for. I had worked endlessly but had forgotten to explore myself and my ambitions. Well, it turned out that I got into really good colleges and had amazing options, but found myself really lost which created a very tough month (emotionally). Anyway, you have time so read, explore yourself, hang out with friends, study for fun (haha), get involved in the community, and perhaps take on a summer program.

I wrote all of my essays, filled out all my apps, did all the supplements, everything app-related you can think of over the summer. It made it really easy senior year, especially when I had a 6 AP load. Plus, when all of my friends were complaining about college apps I was just happy I was done :).

BE PRODUCTIVE.
