UIUC Class OF 2022 Admissions Thread

@cmd7131 Thanks for the hope, only UW Madison can save me now. Where did your daughter go to do CS?

ACCEPTED!!!
College of Liberal Arts and Sciences: Psychology
GPA: 3.3 unweighted 3.9 Weighted
SAT: 1210
Very Short essay (Under 200 Words)
Underwhelming EC’s but one of them related to my Major

For the awards and honors section, I put that i attended a salute to academic achievement event from the university of illinois system. Although I feel the achievement itself had no barring on my acceptance, I feel that it is important to display some demonstrated interest on your application. For future applicants looking at this thread for reference, try to subliminally show that you are serious about Illini, which can be expressed by attending seminars and going to invited events.

Congrats to everyone!

How hard is it to get into Statistics + Computer Science compared to Computer Science?

I just got in an REALLY WASNT expecting. Did you get in?

@charizard1234 - I assume you were asking me, @literallymarx is a student at U of I (unlikely he/she has a D) :slight_smile:

My D1 goes to Georgia Tech for CS. My D2 has been accepted to U of I Stats and CS for Fall 2018 and is strongly leaning towards going there. Hasn’t made her mind yet, but that where it is trending

Ds waitlisted for CS, which is disappointing. 3.98/4.6 GPA, 11 APs, National Merit, 35ACT, varsity athlete, stellar musician, and ironically, currently taking multivariable calculus through U of I. Feeling a bit like WTH is wrong with our state?!

@sethkuwen there are lots of threads on this topic. Stats and CS or Math and CS are somewhat easier than CS in COE but they are still hard and have a low acceptance rate. If I recall, CS; Stats/CS or Math/CS and then CS + X is the order of competitiveness. It doesn’t mean other CS programs are easy to get in, they are just easier relative to CS.

Accepted!!!

Great ECs
Decent essays

As I made the decision to apply UIUC just a week before the deadline, I didn’t have enough time to proofread the essays but somehow I got in! My English isn’t great so I was expecting a rejection due to the bad essay. Congrats to all other people who got in!

Accepted into the College of LAS: Biochemistry

3.6 UW / 4.4 W GPA
33 Act Composite: 35 E, 32 M, 31 R, 35S
I believe good / great ECs
Good Essay

I’ve heard that they only admit around 100 biochem undergraduates however, I don’t know if this makes the program competitive or unpopular at the school. In any case, I’m leaning towards Wisconsin for biochem / neuroscience.

Oh, I’m also in-state.

Waitlisted. Why? Maybe because I sent the application in late on Dec 17 instead of due date of Dec 1. When I realized I had turned it in late, I called admissions office to get refund of application fee. I was told by them it was ok to send application late and it would be reviewed. Also, I did not declare a second choice major on the application. I left it blank. Who knows…

@jeh3924 sorry about your son not getting accepted. I know it is very difficult and frustrating. There was a time when good GPA and test score like what your son has would be a shoe-in for U of I CS, but not any more. Strong stats is still a requirement, however since there are so many competitive applicants they are looking for that one differentiator. My D is doing U of I multi variable at HS as well. She has way less ACT score, and slightly lower GPA, but has 13 APs, 4 dual credit courses and 6 honors. I wasn’t even expecting her to be accepted to Stats and CS. We were so nervous, I really don’t know what stood out in her app, but all I can say is we are so happy. She did write a great essay, and I know everyone believes they did. But she really focused on why Stats and CS, and why she believed she was a fit. Perhaps it was her AP CS and AP computer sci principles or PLTW, or may be it was her software engineering internship or being in a winning team in an hackathon that worked in her favor - just don’t know.

She got denied at Purdue CS, UMN CSE (they offered her BA CS in CLA), got deferred at GT. It seems like there’s a luck factor as well, beyond just stats.

Hope your S has admit offers from other good schools and I am sure he will be successful where ever he goes. Best wishes.

More evidence that CS or CS+X admission is very difficult at UIUC.

Son: Denied
Applied: CS as 1st major; Math + CS as 2nd major
GPA: 4/4, unweighted
SAT: 1550 (Math 800)
Subject tests: Math II (800), Physics (800)
AP US History, Calc BC (taken as freshman), Physics 2, Physics Mech, Physics E&M: 5, 5, 5, 5, 5
DE at local major state university: 18 credits hours in math beyond calculus - all As, including two sophomore & 4 junior level math classes.

Fortunately, he has some other good options.

@syzygy53 is stats like that got denied, I really don’t know who got accepted at CS in UIUC

@syzygy53 I read somewhere that if an applicant has CS as first choice and CS + X as second, it lowers their chance for CS + X than someone who has CS + X as a first choice. I know of someone with the same scenario as your S and wasn’t accepted. They really don’t want students to use CS + X as a backdoor to CS. When my daughter did her app, we looked at a lot of different factors like competitiveness, her admissibility and interest when choosing Stats and CS as first choice major. It really worked out in the end. She is so happy. It was the best decision we made.

accepted to LAS Economics !!!

@cmd7131 : We did not know this, but perhaps UIUC should state that one should not list CS+X (or in this case, X+CS) as a second major if CS in COE is listed first. But strictly speaking, it is not a back door per se, since the majors are in different colleges.

Not sure why he would be denied Math+CS: Forgot to say, he was first in the state as a junior on AMC12a and a two time AIME qualifier.
