UIUC is a dream down the toilet. Thanks to Tuition on Crack.

If you don't live in Illinois, and you've considered UIUC, you noticed that the OOS tuition is remarkably INSANE. (42-45ish grand?)

My family will likely not be able to pay for this, and we will likely get very little financial aid. Also, I don't qualify for any scholarships. My grades are not good enough.

I'm pretty sure I wont be a NMS or NMSF either.

So assuming I get in, how can I still go to this school? Is there anything I can do do pay for it?

what I'm about to say will sound kind of pathetic lol -- just a heads up. I've called up a lot of schools lately with a lot of weird questions, so if I were you, I would call up UIUC, explain the financial situation and that you are out-of-state, and ask how much $$$ you can realistically receive if accepted. If they give you a general idea (most do), ask for some serious specifics. Most universities do have their own little financial aid departments and would be happy to give you estimates.

And I'm really sorry, but if that phone call leaves you feeling very pessimistic, maybe you should look at other schools -- I had to b/c of money problems as well. :/

Whats wrong with the U of M or Wisconsin? :)

You could investigate what it would take to become an Illinois resident. You may need to become independent and live and work in Illinois on your own for a year.

But as long as the student is not independent for FA purposes:

24 years old
completed a first bachelors
married
A veteran
has their own dependent for whom they provide more than 50% support
A ward of the court before turning 18

Their state or residence will be where their parents live.

Many state U's do not grant in-state status for the sole reason of attending school there.

The UIUC website lists their OOS tuition at $26,024 - $30,176, depending on your program. Not cheap, but a far cry from $42-$45K.

I am glad you are recognizing that costs to attend out of state universities,( especially when your past academic prowess, doesn't inspire the school to give you grants), will be high & are looking for other options.

MSEP Home Page

Your situation isn't any different than other students who want to go out of state, although many do try and make themselves as attractive as possible, to expand their scholarship possibilities.

1moremom...>> The UIUC website lists their OOS tuition at $26,024 - $30,176, depending on your program. Not cheap, but a far cry from $42-$45K. <<<

He probably is using the total Cost of Attendance (COA), since that is the "true cost". When someone is coming from oos, then obviously they will need to pay for room and board, as well as books and fees. So... his estimate if probably correct.

2007-08 New Student - Undergraduate Nonresident Program

Tuition* & Fees Room & Board Books & Supplies Other Expenses TOTAL

Base Rate 25,330 8,196 1,200 3,320 38,046

Chem/Life Sciences 29,122 8,196 1,200 3,320 41,838
Business 29,122 8,196 1,200 3,320 41,838
Engineering 29,122 8,196 1,200 3,320 41,838
ACES (CPSC, NRES) 26,330 8,196 1,200 3,320 39,046
ACES (ANSC, FSHN, TSM/ABE) 27,330 8,196 1,200 3,320 40,046

Yep... looks like that's what he used ... COA

Wishwash...

Why don't you give us your stats (GPA, test scores, etc) so that some of us can make some suggestions for good options for you that will be "financial safeties."

And... what will your likely major be? Your career goal?

Seriously, you need to have some good financial safeties because likely UIUC may not happen due to finances.

Believe me.... there is NOT just ONE school where you will be happy. There are others schools that will provide a great education and experience for you.

There are many parents on this board that will tell you that their children did not get to go to their "dream school" (for whatever reasons) and yet their children have managed to be extremely happy at one of their other choices.

@ JL50ish:

I have no idea what I'd major in, so I'll apply to DGS. However with the scholarship thing, I don't know If I'll be able to get one. Heck, I'm not even sure if I can get admitted.

When my sister went to college a few years ago, we got no financial aid whatsoever.

These are my stats. Any scholarships possible?

I am a dedicated rower.. I row 4-6 times a week in the summer, and 3-4 times in the school year.

But the thing is, U of I IS REALLY where I want to go to school. And if not being able to pay for it would jeopardize that, I'd really be devastated.

There HAS to be some way!

...Can you think of some similar schools that I could likely get into/ more importantly PAY FOR?

It's not exactly cheap in state either. That's why I left.

There's nothing particularly special about it. U of Minnesota is very comparable.

Ok...

Considering that you're from an upper class income, you will not receive ANY financial aid whatsoever from UIUC.

So, unless your parents are going to "cough up" the $40k+ per year to go there, it's not going to happen. You won't even get the "better rate" student loans, because of parents' income.

How much are your parents willing to pay per year?

What is DGS??? Division of General Studies??? Is that a major or is that an undeclared major? Or does it have something to do with General Education (Core Curriculum classes)????

Dude, though, seriously. I'm UPPER CLASS. Both my parents are LAWYERS. And we STILL can't pay for this. This is epically LAME. Are ALL the OOS kids at Illinois like shiny rich snobs who wear really nice clothes?
If I get into UIUC (I think I have like a 60% chance), Merit Based Scholarships will NOT come in my direction because I'd be a lower stander.

Why is UIUC so inaccessible to out of staters financially? Does this tuition mean that the admission rate for OOS applicants is higher? (If yes, that's sad and mean.)
Is their OOS population so low because people just don't want to pay 45 grand?

@ SaveOnUndergrad: I know that U of Minnesota is comparable with a lower tuition, but I HATE the city of Minneapolis and I don't like the U of M that much either. I'm not even planning to apply there, despite it's low tuition.

There's always Purdue I guess, a little more obtainable. $32,000 a year.

Oh and at UIUC, DGS is Division of General Studies. It's general courses, but you explore to figure out what you wanna major in. It's the easiest college to get into there, so maybe that would give me a higher chance at a scholarship of some sort...

Wish..

What can your parents pay.... I truly can't believe that two attorneys can't pay for some/all of your college. (If they insist that they can't, tell them to sell a BMW or two)

You have to understand, in-state tuition is a "subsidized tuition" - meaning that each in-state student's tuition is partly paid for by Illinois tax-payers. In-state students are only paying for "part" of their own tuition - the rest is paid for by Illinois tax payers. Therefore, those tax-payers are not going to be subsidizing students whose families are not fellow Illinois tax-payers. That is not being "mean" - it's actually quite fair.

You're right that you'll unlikely get any merit scholarships from there - they don't offer many and the few that they do will likely go to in-state students. And your stats aren't high enough.

So.... if Purdue is more "obtainable," are you saying that your parents can pay $32k per year????

BTW.... how are your cross country and track stats? Any chance for a sports scholarship anywhere? Maybe not at a "top school" but you might be able to snag one from a "mid range" school. Can your coach help you with any of that?

See, they may be able to pay, or may not, but my parents are getting in my face telling me that I won't be admitted to UIUC anyway, and if I am, I'll fail out of it; therefore they're not going to waste that much money on a "pointless year" when I could be going to a community college or something, where I "belong" according to my parents.

I think the caliber of the university has more to do with it. They don't want to pay for a place where they don't think I'll succeed at. But I KNOW that if I go to UI, I'll do fine.

And they don't want to talk about it until/unless I get accepted.

Wish..

Why do your parents have the opinion that you would "flunk out"? Do you party a lot? Do they think that once you get on campus, you'll party your time away? What has happened in your past that has made them think that you'd flunk out?

Just getting accepted is not going to change whether they believe that you will "flunk out". You need to demonstrate NOW that you take your schooling seriously, that you are responsible for school and home responsibilities (chores or whatever). You have been doing something to make them think this way... what is it???

If you have a night curfew and you've been staying out too late - stop that. If you can't get yourself up in the morning, change that. If you are disorganized, pull yourself together.

You need to demonstrate that you are a serious minded person... not someone just out for a "good time" (I'm guessing that is what they assume you are.).

Where else are you applying? You need to have a 2 reaches, 2-3 matches, 2 safeties, and 2-3 financial safeties (in case your parents refuse to pay for high tuition).

BTW... since you don't have a major anyway, you can transfer to UIUC after you've chosen a major and you've proven that you can be a serious student somewhere else.

I don't party, drink, smoke, etc.
It's just that I struggled a lot in NINTH GRADE.
Applying to:
Reaches: UW-Madison, UMich, U Washington
Matches: UIUC, IU, Ohio State
Safeties: St. Cloud State, U Minnesota-Duluth, Purdue

Wish...

Glad to hear that. but it does seem strange that your parents aren't giving you any credit for getting your act together for 10th and 11th grade. Why is that??? And why did your grades "tank" in 9th grade? What caused that???

BTW... Is UIUC a "match" for an oos student with your stats? 55% of students accepted are in the top 10% of their class, and your ACT is in their mid range of those accepted, so UIUC is a "reach" for you. Also, often higher stats are required for oos students at a state flagship of this caliber.

Also, Purdue is a match for your stats, not a safety (I assume you are talking about Purdue - West Lafayette (the flagship).
