UIUC vs Purdue vs UT Austin

I'm transferring CC from Pakistan to either UIUC or UT Austin or Purdue. No financial aid in any of the colleges. My major is Electrical Engineering

What would you people prefer keeping in my mind not just the rankings, but the level of competitiveness at the college, overall environment and the research prospects?

UIUC
Purdue
UT Austin

In this order.

Can anybody else also give their opinion. Replies would be appreciated

UIUC,
then Purdue,
then UT Austin

Hope to see you at UIUC next year. I’m applying too.

All three have strong engineering programs. You’ll be fine at any of them academically. Is there a particular part of the country you would like to end up working in after you graduate? If the midwest, then UIUC or Purdue. If Texas, then of course UT. Other locations, I wouldn’t think it would matter as much since all have great reputations in engineering.

As far as the city you actually will live in, Austin has West Lafayette and Champaign beat to death.

UT-Austin

UIUC
Purdue

Austin is much more lively … Silicon Valley of the South; Live Music Capital of the World; 6th Street; crazy sports town, etc.

UT/UIUC Even
Purdue

I think the differences between all three programs, in terms of quality, is pretty negligible. The main differences arise between the non-academic factors, such as overall quality of the student body, nice atmosphere, nice town, etc…In those regards, UT wins.

All excellent schools. Illinois has the largest engineering research budget, but UT has the strongest faculty in terms of National Academy of Engineering membership. Illinois ranked slightly higher for engineering, but UT ranked slightly higher overall in terms of breadth/depth of ranked academic programs. As others have said, Austin as a place to go to college wins hands down… easily one of the top 5 cities in the country to go to college. Texas also has the advantage of having one of the strongest job markets in the country, with opportunities in Austin, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio nearby.

UT-Austin is the best all-around choice. All three have great engineering programs but the location, student body, and overall vibe of UT tips the scales in its favor.

Thanks everybody for your input. As I’m looking forward to a career in research, I’m guessing that the local job market isn’t something I would care much for.

As for Austin being the best place to be among the three, I’ve come to realize that it really is an awesome city to attend college in.

Which of the UIUC, Purdue, UT Austin offers better Merit scholarships. While awarding merit scholarships do these schools look into Parent’s income as criteria ?

Thanks

^ All three are bad places for OOS merit aid.

Even though I love Purdue with a passion, I would also agree that UT-Austin is the place to be. They are a great school in almost every aspect from athletics, social life, academics, the ladies ;), etc.

Yeah, merit scholarships for international students are hard to come by at all big public schools.

UT is great for engineering and Austin beats Urbana-Champaign and West Lafayette by ten thousand miles. The weather is excellent (at least for the non-summer months), the sports teams are !!!, and the city is a fun place for students. My father got his P.H.D in CS from UIUC and we now live in Austin, he never wants to go back to Urbana-Champaign, lol. It’s so flippin cold!

Austin - silicon valley of the south; live music capital of the sorld; 6th street … enough said.

My USNWR Engineering Ranking list is coming in handy today!!
Per 2008 ranking:

5- UIUC

$9- Tie between Purdue and UT-A
The rankings are so close, academically they are likely all fine for eingineering.

UT-A is highly regarded overall, for all majors, so I guess in this instance I’d vote for UT though all would be a great place for the poster.
