UK Student wanting to study in the US :)

Hello everyone :D,

let me give you some background of mine. I was born in Germany, still holding a german pass (valid for another 1.5 years) and moved to UK 4 years ago. I'm about to go to uni in the UK doing my first year (undergraduate). Btw I'm 19 years old (turned 19 this year) and I'd really appreciate if you could walk me through this.

I've done a bit of research of studying in the US. But my main concern is funding. The course fee's seem to be fair for residential students but incredibly high for international students like myself. Almost everywhere it cost us 30% more than for US residents. I have also read that the student finance, in the USA also known as financial aid, are very limited to international students.

Now the first question might sound a bit weird but, do you think it's better to come over with a f1 visa or to actually move to the US?

I know the 2nd choice is going to be more expensive and a lot of paperwork but in the long run I will be able to get more finance aid. Also being an US resident opens so many new doors to access additional finance.

Hopefully I didn't bore anyone with my wall of text and looking forward for a few replies :)

Do you have a close relative (parent, sibling or spouse) who’s a US citizen or permanent resident? Otherwise you cannot easily immigrate to the US. You’d need a green card to qualify for most financial aid. You can get one in the following ways:

 • win the green card lottery (your odds as a German are about 2%)
 • be granted asylum
 • family-based: through parents, siblings or spouses
 • employment-based: this requires a Bachelor’s degree and your employer would have to convince authorities that there are no Americans qualified and willing to take your job. (Most of those are high-tech positions that require a graduate degree and specialized work experience.)
