UM Transfer Fall 2014 Question

Okay, this has been sitting on my mind for a very, very long time. Like hella long. (Crossposted from UM forum, too!)

I'm looking to apply for transfer for Fall 2014, but the only thing holding me back the single letter of recommendation I have to acquire in order to submit my app. At least, that's what the Common Application says, right?

I asked an admissions representative on live-chat about a week ago about the recommendations requirement, and she said that yes, a recommendation is required for the application. That should be where the question ends.

But on the LSA site, Undergraduate Application | LSA Students | University of Michigan, it does not say that an academic evaluator recommendation is required for transfers. This seems to align with everything everyone else has said in the past transfer threads.

Perhaps just trying to be hopeful, but is there anybody out there who can tell me fo' sho' if a recommendation is required for transfer or not? I would really appreciate it. And even if the recommendation was not required, how do we submit the Common Application without inviting a recommender? (I'm tearing my hair out because none of my professors have responded to my LOR requests, and I'm really cutting it close to the deadline. I'd really like to know if I should keep trying for Fall or if I should put it off for Winter 2015.)

I asked them and they said they don’t really care, but common app rules say you have to have one and you can’t submit an app without one. I would just find anyone who will write something nice about you and don’t worry.

The CA doesn’t make ‘rules’ for what needs to be submitted, each individual school does. The UMich website clearly states that LORs are not necessary. Does the CA actually prevent you from submitting w/o designating a LOR? I ask because many CA schools don’t require LORs.

Thanks for the responses, guys!

Yeah, that’s what I’d thought was going on, Adil3tr. Thanks for the assurance! I’ll try a little harder to find someone willing to say at least one nice thing about me…

The Common App doesn’t let us submit our app without assigning a recommender, yeah. At least for UM. It’s a hard knock life.
