UMass Amherst 2021 decision thread

I wouldn’t say there is one school that is necessarily harder than another. I think engineering, computer science, and Isenberg are the three most competitive programs. You sound like you have a good chance of getting in based off of stats but college decisions also has to do with look so who knows

I thought schools had to tell us by 4/1?! I’ve heard from every school except umass and one that I changed my
Major for but they said I’d hear by 4/1. Mid April is ridiculous

They said mid to Late April when I called and asked this week. Crazy that every other school can make it happen within a reasonable time frame.

Thank you – I cannot believe how stressful this is. As I said, my 2 older sons went to UMass Amherst, but this stress level is a new thing. Maybe knowing more about the process makes it worse, I don’t know. We all sort of went blithely through this before, without thinking about it! The other thing that is really irritating is that my son is applying for local scholarships, most of which are due 4/1, and most of which want to know where he is going. Why do we do this to our young people?

Is Umass Amherst much harder to get into than JMU?

When your child got the email that spire was updated, was it early a.m.? Just wondering if they only update over night? This morning I received no update so now its the weekend, so impossible to hear today or over the weekend?

@ananva I just looked at the time stamp on the email and it reads 2:30 PM. I do remember that I checked the portal first thing in the morning and it didn’t show anything new, and application status check showed that the application was still under review. A little bit later in the morning I checked again (not sure why, nervous habit), and that’s when the portal information looked different (but this was much earlier in the day than when the email was received).

The early decision was released on a Friday night about 6:30. Check again tonight. Probably so people don’t call and have until Monday to find answers to their questions on line. LOL

If UMass can’t get acceptances out by Apr 1 then I will recommend my son make a decision without it.

this is relating to an earlier post about merit scholarships because of the highest amounts that they saw. i am an in state student and received $5,215 per year

I just checked my son’s portal and he was accepted. Have not received any email as of yet. He applied to computer science but was accepted in the Exploratory Track for computing & informatics. We are OOS and he received $12 per year chancellors award. Still waiting on financial aid info. He has other options where he was accepted as cs so not sure what we’ll do…by the way, I checked the portal Saturday morning and it wasn’t there then.

Congratulations. Ours still says under review for both children, in state.

I agree that receiving an acceptance in Late April is a bit much. Most colleges want a deposit by May 1st. I guess kids will need to make a quick decision. Are many kids getting waitlisted?

Got acceptance. Noticed update on Spire this afternoon local Indian time. No email received as yet. Got scholarship. Some relief after a long wait.

Why are all of the OOS students finding out but not in state? Kind of difficult for in state students to make it to the spring open house on the 8th this way…

Admitted in-state. 3.5 GPA 1230 SAT. Good luck all.

Still no decision yet, should I start getting worried?

I see no reason to worry at all. They indeed seem to be updating SPIRE once/twice a week and are taking their own time.

We are still waiting also, 1260 sat with 3.28 unweighted gpa, Band. And other son is 1140 sat 2.93 unweighted gpa and lots extracurricular rotc, deca etc. Both were accepted to Umass Lowell, Umass Dartmouth, St Anselm, UNH, Wentworth Institute, waitlisted at UVM, accepted also Salem State and Westfield State. But they both want to go to Umass Amherst! So trying to be patient.

@ananva - I have a D16 that waited until April of last year for her acceptance to UMass Amherst. She had long been accepted to UMass Lowell, UVM, Wentworth, UConn and a few others but really liked UMass Amherst and is very happy there. My S17 on the other hand applied EA to UMass Amherst; UMass Lowell; Wentworth and several others. He was accepted to Amherst - but was more impressed with the programs at Lowell and Wentworth. These two made his final three list. Good luck to your sons, I hope they receive good news from Amherst soon, I just want them to know if they are pursuing Engineering - they have some excellent choices with the acceptances they already have in hand.
