UMass Amherst 2021 decision thread

@as1799 I am not sure a 3.7wGPA is going to be enough to get you into the CHC at umass. The GPA requirement has been rising as more and more kids forgo private schools because of cost. The smart kids are all heading to the state schools.

Good luck to you. I wish you the best.

What’s so special about CHC? I never had the chance to visit or get to know about it from anybody.
Is that much better than regular college?
Also is it good for CS?

I meant the school in general. I don’t think I’ll get into chc, but I’m interested in finding out

My understanding of the CHC is that the students there are the valedictorians/top 10 of their respective classes. It looks like it was created to make the state schools more appealing to the top tier students. Our neighbor was 15th in his class and didn’t get in with a 4.10 weighted GPA.

this year for the first time they’re also considering ECs for CHC, so it’s more holistic. if your gpa, act etc is strong and you also have good extracurriculars you might have a better shot than others

@clgmama Those are the stories that made me make my comment. Not getting into a state honors college with a 4.10 GPA means they are attracting some very smart kids.

It’s unfortunate that there are kids from four different majors probably won’t be hearing today… And we have no specific date to look forward to with our decision
(Business, engineering, computer science, and nursing)

@c011e9e yeah. I applied for engineering and I JUST WANT TO KNOW. Does anybody know when these “batches” are released after today?

@c011e9e How’d you get to know that those 4 majors won’t hear today?

I know. Unfortunate they make those four majors (colleges) wait longer. Does not see equitable.

@wolfwing123 in the email that Umass sent on Wednesday saying decisions will come out on Friday, but if you keep reading it mentions these few majors…

"Greetings from UMass Amherst! We will begin releasing Early Action decisions on Friday, December 16th and will continue through mid-January. Decisions are released in batches and in no particular order. If you applied to a selective discipline or major, such as Business, Engineering, Computer Science, or Nursing, it may take a little longer to receive your decision because of the volume of applicants. As a result, don’t worry if your friends or classmates have received their decision and you are still waiting. This is not an indicator of your admissibility to the University. "

Well I’m going to bed then. It’s midnight here in India.

After looking at some past “UMass Amherst class of ____ decision threads” threads on here, it seems the first day or two of the official decision period is very slow (virtually no decisions), but most decisions are sent in the first couple weeks, and then a few are released even after the official period ends (yikes). (For anyone who doesn’t know, the official period for this year is December 16th - “mid-January.”) People invited to the CHC definitely seemed favored to get their acceptances first, but not always (i.e. don’t think you’re not automatically not getting into the CHC if you don’t hear back in the first few days).

As for today, I go to a pretty sizable MA public school and talked to several people across different majors and academic levels, and nobody seemed to have received a decision today.

Also - and this is the most important thing IMO - it seems that for some people in previous years, Spire wouldn’t update the “Application Status Check” page (the page with the info on whether they received your scores ‘n’ stuff) but it would update the home page (the page that pops up immediately after putting in your log-in info and pressing enter). Like, as of right now for me (no decision received), the home page has a bunch of general acknowledgement info, deadlines, dates, etc. When people were accepted, though, it would update to appear like this: http://m.imgur .com/vfpWrbM?r (copy and paste the link and remove the space), telling you that you were accepted, your major, CHC status, etc. but the actual application status check page would continue saying “in progress” or “under review” or whatever for a few days after the home page had updated. So always pay careful attention to the home page whenever you log in - I’m not sure if they’ve fixed this issue for this year or not, because I believe this issue existed in a year where they sent snail mail as well so maybe they didn’t think it was as important to fix.

The UMass Admissions twitter actually tweeted a few hours ago that the first batch of decisions would be released “most likely” sometime in the afternoon but that it was up to their tech department to release them. They also said you would be receiving an email if and when your status in spire changes. I have been checking and there’s nothing on mine at least as of yet, it is still “under review”. Hope they get some of the decisions out soon!

Just a reminder to review post #11 in this thread…

Well, grab a popcorn and enjoy the rants then

I believe it’s worth pulling the infamous “post #11” down here near post 75 because it’s worth reading twice (and very nicely written

Here it is:

To avoid driving yourselves crazy, I recommend you review acceptance threads from previous years. The notification process has historically dragged on far longer than it should. There appears to be no apparent pattern to acceptance notification order, although everyone will try to guess what it might be. There will invariably be entries here that thinks its alphabetical: “My last name starts with an ‘M.’ Did any other M’s get notified?”…or by college: “Did any other CompSci majors get notified?” or “Maybe the Honors College gets notified first…or last”

Then there will be all the posts that say “every other school my son or daughter applied to has notified us. We’re going crazy waiting! This isn’t fair to the kids! UMass should be ashamed!” Etc., etc."

Hey all, it’s decision day, and I just wanted your feedback on my chances of acceptance into UMass in general as well as CHC.

I’m from Georgia. 3.88 Unweighted, 9 APs, 8 Dual Enrollment, 34 Composite ACT, 2 internships, and a job.

@jalibro25 you just said it… “decision day”. What good will it do you to have a random stranger with no influence chance you on decision day? Just wait a little bit hahaha. Not trying to be cold, just reasonable. Best of luck

Haha you’re right. Just trying to calm my nerves lol
