UMass Amherst vs Northeastern for biology major

I am majoring in biology and am thinking that I will want to go into research, not premed. I might want to be a professor at a large university who does research. Also, I may possibly want to minor in environmental science and possibly work with renewable energy, etc.

Anyways, I love northeastern and it’s location in boston but its about 60k a year and umass amherst is about 24k a year. I will run track and although I couldn’t get money this year I think it is realistic for me to be able to get money next year…

I have 2 days to decide… HELP

Did you visit both? I found NEU envi sci program to be heavily slanted to marine issues. They are growing the department, however. My vote is for UMass for you. Don’t count on that money next year. I know so many athletes who are promised $$ “when you…” and they somehow never quite get there. Next year there will be all those new Freshmen as well…

That’s a good point! Thank you!

UMass is great for research. As a freshman, I’ve talked to several professors who offered me the opportunity to do research with them. My roommate is working with a professor on promoting artificial cartilage growth. If you can make yourself stand out, you will have plenty of opportunities.

There’s also a ton to do out here. It’s no Boston, but Northampton is a cool little town with a more urban feel, and downtown Amherst has a few nooks and crannies.

If you don’t care about prestige or grad school, I would go with UMass because of the cost.

I’d go to UMass – unless money is totally not an issue in your family, the price difference is just too high a premium to pay for Northeastern.

@informative UMass is an excellent school and students get into good grad schools.

Thank you everyone! I chose UMass. (:
