I don’t understand the process either. My daughter also has AP credits to 2 of the 3 gateway classes. She has 4 years of programing classes through her Magnet school and paid internship in a computer filed.
I found the following link which explains what I was trying to say:
Basically, a students status is not based on their current year at UMD, but on the number of credits that they have. My D was considered a Junior in her Sophomore year because of the number of credits she had and was able to register in the Junior time period.
Students are actually given a date and time when they can begin registering for the next semester.
hmmm good to know now. We did not list the courses under high school credit. My daughter is graduating high school in only 3 years while also completing her AA degree before graduation. She was offered Spring and FC and a 2+2 plan at Penn State. Kinda makes me wonder if we would have listed things differently if it would have been different
The UMD forum on reddit has a 2022 Admitted Students Mega Thread with some good info.
@SoofDad your help in these forums is invaluable! Thank you so much!
My son tells me that BK invites went out this evening. He didn’t get one, but one of his friends did. Good luck to all!
Yup! I received one! Super excited about a full/partial ride to UMD! Best of luck to your son’s friend!
I called the admissions office on monday and they told me that they would give my decision in 7-10 days as they do not know why my application was held back. I have not received my decision yet… anyone else with the same issue?
How did you find out? Was something in your portal or an email?
same here
BK Invite emails were sent out yesterday evening with a link to confirm and schedule interviews.
Congrats and best wishes to all who received BK invites!
Would you mind sharing stats please?
Thank you and congratulations to everyone who got an invite!
Cute story about the BK invites . . . my son came downstairs all excited this morning. His friend who got a BK invite told him that he “isn’t going to use his, as he has already been accepted to his top choice school.” He feels badly that my son, who has slightly higher stats and will likely go to UMD, didn’t receive an invite. He told him that he’s calling UMD on Monday morning to have the invite transferred to my son. LOL. The way he sees it, they shouldn’t have any problem with giving the interview to my son instead, since “they are both pretty similar academically.” I explained to my son that it doesn’t work that way, but what a nice gesture for his friend to make. It’s good to see the kids being so kind to each other during such a stressful time in their lives!
It’s great that your son has a friend like that, but as you said -“It doesn’t work that way”
After being on this forum for a while, I’m convinced that Stats are not a deciding factor in getting a B/K invite.
Assuming that my son attends UMD (he hasn’t made a final decision yet), this will be my 3rd child at this school (one graduated in 2018 and one will graduate this May). None of my high stats kids received a BK invite, so we definitely get it. We didn’t have any expectations that he would receive an invite, as while his grades and test scores are stellar, he doesn’t really have the leadership qualities that they tend to look for in their BK scholars. We’re just happy that he was accepted and invited to the Honors College. Any merit would just be icing on the cake at this point.
I’m fairly certain that all those who are invited to the B/K luncheon and interview receive either the partial or full scholarship. The only question now is how much? Receiving the invitation makes the student a BK semifinalist. Showing up for the interview makes the student a BK finalist. Receiving the results of the interview (either partial or full scholarship) makes the student a BK Scholar. At least, that was my understanding of the process. Luckily, my daughter had already done a couple of private university interviews before the BK interview, so she felt comfortable talking about herself and her interests. Convey passion! My DD said that the interviewers (2 faculty members) were very kind. Honestly, the whole day is about UMD selling itself to your kid. Have your child wear business clothes. One mom at the luncheon said that her family did not receive the memo regarding dress. I’m sure that the professors were kind nonetheless, but I wouldn’t want to stand out for being underdressed. Even if your child is not totally sold on UMD, it’s a lovely event to attend. I think that about 50% of the BK scholars turn down the scholarship for even greener pastures, but I don’t have the exact numbers now. There definitely are BK scholars who turn down Ivies and other attractive options for the prospect of a free education. Best wishes! My DD had her BK day pre-universal mask wearing, but I think I would consider getting one of these clear masks for the day if my child wanted to show her best smile. ClearMask™
On second thought, the university might require K-N95’s for the BK day. Not sure about that.
PS, at least 2 years ago, BK Scholars received their specific honors college placement on that day. I was told that students often receive either their first choice or University Honors. YMMV. There were some students who were placed into UH instead of ILS or ACES and I think that turned them off from UMD permanently. Nowadays with the brand-new dorms, UH is a more attractive option, but some STEM students still really want ILS or ACES.
Big correction: I should have said before - have your child wear business clothes, not business casual. The vast majority of guys were wearing ties, many with jackets. Most of the girls were wearing jackets, with either dress pants or a business skirt.
