UMD Short Answers -- Help?

So, the directions for the short answers for the University of Maryland College Park say "Complete the following sentences in 20 words or fewer, using only the space provided."

I figured that this was a limit where there was some leeway, akin to those for essays, especially considering that there was an 160 character limit for the boxes on the online app. I managed to answer all the questions within the space allotted (though over the 20-word rule), finished my app, went to look over the PDF preview, and found that some of my answers had been cut off.

I know that UMD uses electronic apps exclusively, and was wondering if anyone could tell me if the app readers would see my responses in the non-preview, non-paper version. I know that it's stupid, since the rules are clearly stated, but is is generally okay to go over the word limit, while obeying a character limit? Will the college get annoyed that I didn't "follow the rules"? Will the colleges even be able to see those responses?

Thanks in advance!

Stay within the limits for your final submission, especially for large schools with their own electronic websites like UMD. I remember on the one of these app sites, It accepted longer answers, but the printout shortened it anyways.
UMD really wants short answers here. You can cut your answer down to fit, I would think?
