My daughter was accepted for the Spring 2014 semester into the Letters and Sciences. Her intended major is Engineering. She would do the Freshman Connection for the Fall term. She received no aid and we are also OOS.

She was however accepted to UConn for the Fall 2013 and into Engineering. She is also receiving a grant for $10,870.

I would pick UConn for the reasons Rodney stated. Even if she could transfer into Engineering at UMD later on, I doubt that she would graduate on time. They’re pretty similar schools. Good luck to your D.

Well lets be accurate, in terms of Engineering, Maryland and Uconn are not similar schools. Maryland is typically ranked as one of the Top 25 engineering schools in the country. Most rankings put it between 20 and 25. Uconn on the other hand is typically ranked about 75th. Its a Tier 3 engineering program. Every one of Maryland’s programs (EE, ME, etc.) are ranked much higher than Uconn’s. It is not even close. That being said you do have to consider the cost factor and getting directly into Uconn’s engineering program. She would take the risk of being accepted into Maryland engineering.

I also believe that Maryland wins on campus, weather, access to major cities (DC and Balmer) and is much more heavily recruited for engineering.
