UMD vs IU vs OSU vs Miami Ohio

It looks like my son will get into all of the schools listed, with UMD, our state flagship, the one where he may not be qualified to attend the business school as a freshman.
He know he wants business, and he wants a fairly large school. Any comments on any of the schools mentioned? UMD is probably his first choice, but if he doesn't qualify for Smith School. as a freshman he may go out of state. He does not want to go to school where it's very hot. All of these schools seem to nave strong business school.s and he will likely receive some sort of scholarship at all of them. I'd like to hear comments from people with experience related to the schools.

Thanks

My DS is a senior accounting major at Miami OH who has loved his experience. Farmer students are highly desired and well recruited.

DS has had mutliple internships. He had one with a financial services company in Chicago this past summer, and he has already accepted an internship for this coming summer with one of the Big 4 accounting firms in Chicago. Both internships were part of on-campus recruiting. Like at all schools, one of the keys to internships is you need to have decent grades - the big firms and banks often have GPA cutoffs. At Miami a good percentage of the internships and job offers will be to one of the “four C’s” - Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati or Chicago.

The children of family friends have attended both IU-Kelley and OSU with positive experiences. While the academics are very good at all three, the campuses and surroundings are going to be significantly different - I suggest you visit all three. Miami and IU are frequently included on the “most beautiful campus” lists here on CC and elsewhere whereas OSU is more urban.

Miami is a mid-sized university made up primarily of undergraduates in a small town 30 miles from Cincinnati. IU is a large university in small city of 80,000 about an hour from Indianapolis. OSU is a gigantic university in a large city of 800,000. I am sure your student will have a preference for one of these environments.

With respect to Kelley-- realize that Kelley is not that easy to get in to as a direct admit, and that many students end up unhappy when they go to IU with the plan of getting in to Kelley at the completion of their first or second year of studies–it’s not a cake walk, and many students need to go to Plan B. However, once in Kelley, all the students I have known have loved it. Very good placement for jobs in Chicago and New York, from what I have seen.

I know many students who have gone to Miami and OSU as well. The students at those schools seem a little bit less “driven” than the students at IU, for whatever reason, just a bit less gung ho. I don’t know too much about internship and job placement for students from OSU; however, in my experience (with a limited set of students that our family knows), students from Miami sometimes have to work harder to get placements simply because the campus is more isolated. For example, it is harder to get an internship for during the school year at Miami because there are just not that many local opportunities. Also, there are less companies local to Miami and the school is not as big a draw to employers as IU.

Thanks for the input. My son has the stats to be a direct admit to Kelley. I verified that with IU. If he gets 10 more points on his SAT from October, he MAY get up to full tuition at Miami. In previous years it looks like he could have received up to 11 K from IU, but they may be reducing merit money and giving it to more people. I think he’ll get 12K from Ohio State. He has spent lots of time at UMD, and doesn’t want to visit the others until he finds out wherehe gets in.

Your son will have lots of great opportunities, 1214mom. Has he visited any of these schools? Is he also considering University of Illinois?

My son is very familiar with UMD, but has not visited any of the others. We will visit next spring, when he sees where he gets in and what the merit offers look like. He is not considering Illinois. He did bump his SAT score up just enough to be qualified for full tuition at Miami of Ohio. He will get at least 1/2 tuition from them. Indiana seems the best to me, but it’s also the most expensive. He may be leaning slightly to Ohio State, based on what I have no idea.

Just seeing if I can get any additional information on these schools. My son did get direct admit to Kelle, and was invited to join the Indiana honors program. Too bad we are not in-state there.
Thanks

Where does your son want to work after he graduates?

While many people on CC stress over minimal differences in school rankings, I would be more concerned about which school recruits and places graduates, in his major, in the cities where he wants to land.

If he wants to stay on the east coast he is probably better off at UMD. If his goal is Chicago, Indiana and Miami would be best - and to a lesser extent OSU. Somewhere in Ohio, then OSU or Miami. Of the schools Indiana probably has more of a national presence than the others, but it is still strongest in the Midwest.

Unless you are talking Harvard etc., most schools have well defined markets where they are strongest at placing students - especially for business majors.

Thanks. He doesn’t really know where he wants to land. UMD is good bc it’s close to DC and Baltimore, with lots of internship possibilities relatively close to home. But it sounds like IU has a strong reputation in general, so one of those two is looking most likely (if he gets accepted to UMD). We have not ruled out the others though, because even with substantial scholarship IU will probably be most expensive.

Indiana is a great school - especially Kelley. My son is graduating this spring with a bachelors in accounting from Miami. Indiana and Miami are two of the schools where he has applied for masters in accounting programs, so you won’t hear me say anything bad about either one.

Its too bad Indiana made several changes to its scholarships recently - and not necessarily for the better. Last year Miami changed its program and made it more generous, but how specific amounts are determined is quite opaque. You won’t know if you have full or half tuition until the letter arrives. (I learned this first hand with my daughter last year.)

Good luck with the process.

My son received direct admit to both kelley and smith at Maryland for fall 2014. So glad he has choices but confused on where to go. He would be quite happy at both. I think Chicagobear made a good point. Any other input welcome. Thank you.

Daughter admitted to Smith (finance) at Maryland & Kelley at IU as also the College of Business at UIUC. Smith is instate . Which school has a better undergraduate business program? Any advise is appreciated. Thanks.

@UGM2014: You may want to refer Business Week’s results of student survey of their business school experience of major specialty.
Kelley is highly reputed all around.

Drill down into each school for placement information. By and large, if your daughter is interested in working on the east coast, Smith would be a better choice for internships & with in-state tuition provide better return on $ spent on her UG education.

OP here. My son has merit money offers and IU and Miami Ohio (miami Will be cheaper than UMD now), and has been admitted to UMD/Smith. he’s accepted to Kelley and Honors at IU, Farmer and huge scholarship at Miami. We are going to visit Miami next week, and indiana in early March. After merit money, IU will still be over 30K, UMD will be about 20, and Miami will be 16 or so. Any opinions considering costs? He is likely going to be a finance major, but as with most 17 year olds, he may change his mind. Thanks

Enjoy your visit to Miami - I was on campus this weekend for this first time in almost two years (had to see a hockey game before my son graduates). Be sure to see the new Armstong Student Center - it just opened last week! Mike Armstrong, the former Chairman of AT&T, and his wife are Miami alums and made a major donation to fund this new building. The Farmer school building is only five years old and is totally state of the art.

Thank you. At this point I’m excited for him but will be happy when the decision is made and we can start signing up for orientation and taking the next steps.

Thanks @trinity7 for the inputs. @1214mom are you going to attend the kelley direct admit day?
My daughter is also admitted to huttons honors in addition to kelley . Still waiting to hear about scholarship as she is considered an international student and so not eligible to file Fafsa ( although been in us for 7 years ). Maryland (smith) will be instate but haven’t heard about admission to honors from smith. Still thinking…

We are not attending the Kelley direct admit day. We are attending the red carpet day March 10th. If you’ve heard from UMD but haven’t heard about honors, my guess is she was not invited, but I could be wrong. My older son had the invite with his acceptance letter. One reason we are still considering IU is the honors and business direct admits. But Smith is VERY good, and it may not be worth an extra 12K a year to send my son to IU. Miami Ohio gave him a fabulous scholarship, so it will be cheaper than UMD at this point. Good luck with your decision.

nice to see we are not the only ones with similar conflicts - but good conflicts! best of luck to all in the decision making.
