UMICH Stamps Art and Design

Hi, I am a high school junior right now, and will be applying to schools next fall. I am looking to major in art and design, and want to apply to University of Michigan’s Stamps school of art and design. Does anyone have any information about how good this school is compared to a traditional art school? I love the university feel of the school, and the fact that I can take academic courses along with art ones, but I still want a strong art program that prepares me for a job in the art field. I will probably still apply to some more traditional art schools but not sure where yet. Any suggestions?

I like illustration and concept art, and would maybe want to try animation. I’m also going to the Stamps pre-college program this summer.

My daughter just completed her first year at UM and Stamps. You kind of hit the nail on the head about Stamps. The value of the school is the combination of the academics from one of the best schools in the country with an Art school. They are very flexible with your focus and you can combine just about anything with Art. UM has one of the largest alumni in the world and has the reputation to back up your degree. UM offers something very unique that most Art schools can’t even come close to. My daughter has been very happy so far with her classes, both at Stamps and outside the Art school. Ann Arbor is also a very artsy town and it is a good environment. She also attended the summer pre-college portfolio prep program at UM after her sophomore year in high school and it was excellent. The competition is tough though. My daughter was told that over 700 people applied to Stamps and they accepted 150 the year she applied. Your portfolio is 50% of your application and they don’t even look at your portfolio unless you make it through the regular admissions process first. Good luck and enjoy the summer program at UM.

Great! Thanks for the info!
