@hmck32 It’s not just OOS students. Michigan seems to love deferring people though
@hmck32 Two years ago, my son got in on the first EA decision day. We’re in New York City.
Yeah I’m in state and my school is a top 5 feeder school but umich still deferred and wait listed a few people from my school with 34 ACT and 3.9 GPA while accepting out of state applicants with lower stats which is pretty frustrating for us in state. The acceptance rate for the ppl who apply to umich at my school is 55% which means they still reject 45% of us even though we are a top 5 feeder school and 30 minutes away. Umich is getting harder on in state students even though we have a high yield and the number of in state students applying have always stayed the same all these years.
USNWR doesn’t use yield in rankings anymore. UM worries about yield because they need to know how many kids are going to be there in the Fall. There have been some big fluctuations in yield over the last couple years which have caused some administrative issues in AA including having to scramble to find beds for all the incoming students.
Hey guys, Just hopping onto this thread. I was reading estimates of this friday for decisions. Can anyone confirm that??
Last year was 18th? S1 got OOS acceptance that day.
Va Tech is a huge in state school and also has ED, but no EA. I guess you could argue it’s not our state flagship since we have UVa. They don’t have EA, but tend to release their first round of acceptances in late January right around the same time that UVa releases its EA decisions. Funny sometimes how kids would prefer to go to an equally excellent OOS flagship instead of their own one (which would cost significantly less). A question for those from Michigan and who have had kids go there…do the kids tend to stay friends with their HS friends and live with them while there? Or do the Michigan kids integrate well with the OOS students?
Yes they stay friends with them and hang out with them over the years but meet a lot of out of state people. Umich class of 2020 is 50% in state 50% out of state which is very high.
@hmck32 That is not true. My friend, an international applicant, got accepted to umich in EA.
I don’t think ED would solve all of these yield issues (even if it were possible). For my personal situation I wouldn’t have applied ED even if they offered it, but not because UMich is a backup for me. In fact, UMich is an awesome school that is at the top of my list, but I don’t have a first choice school at the moment, and while it may end up being UMich, I was not able to determine that yet in November. I’m not one of the people who applied ED to an ivy or other extremely selective school just using UMich as a backup (which isn’t wrong anyway), but I still wouldn’t have been ready to commit to one school in November.
ED tends to favor the well-to-do since Michigan does not guarantee meeting 100% of demonstrated need. (Very few schools do.) I’m a Penn undergrad and Michigan MBA. My son is interested in both schools (we are OOS) but we could not let him apply ED to either; with have another child two years younger and $60K-$70K per child per year just won’t work for our budget: too poor to pay out of pocket and too wealthy to qualify for very much aid. (Not complaining…we are very fortunate…just a cold, hard fact.)
@Eeeee127 What school do you attend if you don’t mind asking? I am also in state about 30-45 minutes away, what school is a feeder
@amarz12 Northville what about you?
Ewwww. Northville kids… lmao no harm done. If I told you what school I went to, you would be tempted to make the same comment (not Novi).
@Eeeee127 Cranbrook
@UofMichigan1999 Now I’m curious
@uofmichigan1999 what’s wrong with northville?
@Eeeee127 because you guys suck at football compared to Canton Beat you guys twice in a row in playoffs.
@amarz12 I got to Canton which is part of the Park (PCEP). It is the best one out of the 3!
People outside of Southeast Michigan must be incredibly confused.
@UofMichigan1999 @Eeeee127 @amarz12 I live in Southeast Michigan and I’m incredibly confused.
I live in Southeast MI and all I can say is PCEP beats us in marching band every year (I go to Lake Orion)
@Eeeee127 I go to school about 25 minutes from Northville and a sub I had last week was talking about “Northville Failing” i.e. gettings C’s and B’s.
