Umm....hows the internet scene in UIUC??

well yeah u r right this indeed a freaky question and not even close of being any sort of selection criteria...but anyways it is more of a curiosity....hows the internet speeds like??....is there any download limit??

A friend of mine lives in the Engineering Dorm, ISR maybe? He's definitaly got a limit, he complains about it all the time. There are clever ways around it though. Couldnt tell you the speed.

do u hav any idea of the limit??

750 mb per day is the limit in his dorm. Dont know if it changes in other dorms. He says when he's not rate limited and can let it go as fast as he wants, he gets to about 200kb/s downloading and 300kb/s uploading...Whatever that means, i'm just the messenger. I know that my connection at the university of wisconsin was just a tad slower than his, and my connection where i am now at an illinois 4 year public university is muuuch slower. The engineering kids seem to find ways around the rate limit changing IP's and such. You can also go into the lounge on your floor which should have connections that are not limited.

200kb/s?? damn that's slow. I don't know if your refering to bits or bytes, but if its bytes my trusty cable modem from comcast is 5 times faster and if your reffering to bits it's 40 times faster

I'm a freshman in the 6-pack dorms and I just clocked my connection. Here's the stats:

Start Time: 1140489884828
End Time: 1140489885703
Download Time: 0.875
Data Size: 508.458984375
K BYTES/s: 581.1

looks like almost 600 Kbytes/sec

hope that helps

ouch that sucks with 750mb limit, paying for music and movies sucks. Do they block certain ports for apps like bittorrent and stuff?

my friend who gave me the stats i posted above was running a torrent as he gave them to me (perhaps thats why they were much lower than other reports). So to answer your question, they don't block torrents. He uses Azureus, but i'm sure you could just as easily use bit torrent. He's got an xbox, so they dont block that port either. Like i said, when he needs a speedier connection he heads to the lounge on his floor.

It's become quite popular for those who live in dorms to use a program called Mytunes, which lets you view and take anyone's music (who is connected to Itunes) in the whole dorm. Put simply: It rules.

@krbarrett77 u were talking about some "Clever ways around the download limit"....whenever u talk to ur friend pls ask about this as well....thanks!!

hey dexter if ur plannin to go to uiuc....have u decided ur housing.. if so which one??

karan as i said i am still waiting for my other decisions....so i haven't really reasearched the housing options....however from the housing info i recieved i like Hendrick house because it is close to the engineering department....also i think since it is private housing its supposed to be better than unive resi halls....but this is a very vague estimate....i haven't really discussed this thing with a lot of ppl....anyways where r u planning to stay??

am thinking for UNIT ONE- ALLEN HALL (LLC) cause of the extra courses like calculus1,2, and 3, economics and international relationships
