UNC Chapel Hill Class of 2023 EA

I am a senior and I live in state. Applied Early Action.

  • Weighted GPA: 4.4
  • SAT: 1360
  • Class Rank: Just outside of Top 10%
  • Took 7 APs and a decent amount of community college dual-enrollment courses.
  • Played soccer and tennis for 3 years of high school.
  • AP Scholar; National Honor Society member; TSA member; Key Club member; Church Youth Group President/Praise Band Leader; Vice President of Ping Pong Club; volunteered at local hospital during summer (80 hours)
  • Teacher Recommendation was decent; enjoyed the class very much and teacher was one of my favorites
  • Essays decent; topic was generic but I feel as if I gave my own unique voice and felt short answers were pretty good as well

See the existing thread for 2023 EA decisions

I’m new to CC so finding existing threads is difficult for me; would appreciate some feedback but thanks anyway

wait are decisions out?

@malluman oh no i was just asking someone to chance me sorry for the confusion

ahh i c np. I think that you would be a bit below avg for oos, but since ur instate, you have an ok chance. To be brutally honest, I think your sat score is bit low but your courseload/gpa could help pull you through, along with essays

@malluman i heard that the average SAT score was actually like 1320 for UNC applicants. anyway thx for the insight!

Class rank needs to be top 10% for best chances

@chb088 Shouldn’t be too big of a factor?? That and GPA is probably my weakness but I am confident about everything else.

It’s a very large factor. I believe it is why my legacy child wasn’t admitted last year. I’ve never seen anyone with a rank lower than top 10% get in unless they were a recruited athlete. And in Meck and Wake Counties, sometimes a top ten rank isn’t even enough. Good luck.

I should qualify, I’ve never seen anyone with a class rank lower than top 10% get in unless they were a recruited athlete OR a URM.

@chb088 I heard UNC uses holistic admissions so hopefully that will give me a good chance. I live in Cumberland County in case you were wondering. Thanks for the insight!

They do use a holistic admissions model. However with over 40000 applications they have to be able to do some initial sorting and there are a number of factors including GPA, class rank and SAT score that help them do that. Cumberland county is a tier two county which should help you.

@Tuxrd2 how does being a specific tier help by the way?

I probably won’t say it correctly but in essence UNC has a strategic plan in place to draw more heavily from tier 1 and tier 2 counties. So those sorting stats like GPA, rank and SAT/ACT would be lower for those counties. Wake and Meck (among others) are tier 3 and the standards are higher to get in the pile for a deeper consideration.

@Tuxrd2 so I did some research and found that Cumberland County downgraded from tier 2 to 1 this year. Would that increase my chances even more??

Yes

Sry I meant, yes it would. But remember these are all just guessing games really. There are lots of other factors and a good amount of luck involved too.

decisions may come out tomorrow. hopefully admissions made the right choice
