I am currently an out of state community college student, and will be applying to be a junior year transfer. I plan on studying neuroscience with a premed focus, as well as a Spanish minor. I have a lot of family in the area and chapel hill has always been my dream school (:
Here are my stats:
High School: average student
College:
GPA 4.0 Honors Student
College EC:
-NJCAA track and field athlete
-Special Needs therapist (provides in-home therapy twice a day, everyday)
-Editor in Chief of the college newspaper (staff writer for two years, now editor in chief)
-English teacher (teaches night classes to adult Spanish speaking immigrants)
-Research internship at the Library of Congress in Washington DC (conducted research on PTSD along side my mentor, and also completed independent research on Autism treatment programs in Nicaragua)
-Officer of the Psychology club
-Member of the International Club
-Secretary of Volunteer Club
-Currently conducting independent honors research for my college chemistry department
-Worked for two years as a student athletic trainer (treated injured athletes)
-Volunteered for the nonprofit ‘Girls on the Run’
-Study abroad research trip in North Carolina
-Volunteered in Nicaragua at an orphanage and a center for adults with special needs
-Tutored students in biology and chemistry (although this was not a paid job through the school so I’m not sure if I can put this on my resume)
-Awarded Honors Student Excellence award from my college
-Deans list, etc.
-Member of Phi Theta Kappa
In the works, but I hope to organize a clothing drive at my college for an orphanage in Nicaragua. I also hope to start performing in nursing homes and assisted living centers in my hometown as a musician (I play several instruments and perform throughout my current home city, but I’m not certain how to incorporate this into my resume)
A lot of other students in the honors program have pages of activities including publications and starting non-profits and being on various boards which can be pretty intimidating!
My work as a special needs therapist and as a student athlete have become pretty significant time commitments and have not allowed me to pursue as many things as a lot of my peers. I hope the admissions office will consider that I am committed and see that I am consistent with my interests (Spanish, autism research, etc.).
I have heard that getting into Chapel Hill out of state is extremely difficult, with some people even going as far as saying that it can be harder than getting into some Ivy Leagues. Is this still the case for junior transfers?
I have 6 cousins who attended Chapel Hill, 2 who graduated from the medical school, and one who is currently a physician at the college’s hospital. (I have heard having members of your family who have attended can help?)
Just wanted your take and to see if anyone has any info or personal experience?
