@twogirls sounds like there are lots of research opportunities in the sciences and humanities. But without the firm business commitment for intended business majors, I think it’s a different story.
Your daughter definitely hit the jackpot!

So I called and they said all merit scholarships have been given out. As an OOS student who got into Honors and the Research Scholars program, I can honestly say I’m disappointed to not have received a dime of merit aid. Has anyone ever had luck appealing FA or merit awards in the past? UNC is one of my top choices but OOS tuition is too crazy without some help
@collegemomjam my daughter did not apply to the business school. I agree with you that it’s best to take a direct admit elsewhere- good luck!
My daughter’s essays were very quirky as well… @Dolemite you are an outstanding student and I really don’t know why you were not chosen for these programs.
For those who went to Admitted student day, can you comment on the days events and give tips for OOS visitors?
We went through this process four years ago. Our impression is that UNC has a strong focus on providing need based aid and gives very LITTLE merit aid. That is not unusual for top schools. So it does not surprise me that people didn’t get the merit aid they were hoping for. There just isn’t that much beyond the Robertson and the Moorhead Cain scholars. However what is unusual is that they still met full need for all students as they define it.
@sirhcgled You can always ask for more need based aid if you feel that is something that was not considered. However, I doubt that you will be successful asking for more merit aid.
@prep4col: You’ve probably already seen this: http://admissions.unc.edu/admitted-student-day-agenda/rep
Mostly what I recall is tagging along with my child, and going to the academic and enrichment sessions that she wanted to attend; the ones we went to were in a panel format, some with student panelists and some with faculty panelists. She also sat in on an academic class at the invitation of a friend of hers who had graduated from high school a year ahead of her. We did tour an exemplar room in a residence hall on South Campus, which is where most first-year students will live. As a parent, I mostly kept my mouth shut and took it all in, and answered any questions that I was asked.
Wear comfortable walking shoes.
@prep4col My D’s interest in UNC went up today after attending the Admitted Students Day. We are also OOS. The Academic sessions left us with the impression that there are limitless opportunities and many happy students there.
I agree with @gandalf78 comfortable shoes are a must!
So happy @HSCounselor2! FYI my D was helping out today and thought it went very well.
UNC’s definition of meeting full need includes loans. For my D is was basically all loans so that is why I made the comment that it’s cheaper for my D to attend Columbia than UNC. Other top schools meet full need without loans.
@Dolemite that is an extremely important point to make…as everyone reviews their financial aid packages, make sure you know what is grant vs. loan. And yes, most top schools are committed to having their students graduate debt free and don’t even offer loans as part of the financial aid package. Usually, the better schools are truly need blind. There are some exceptions.
There are a few schools that have a no loans policy ( Vanderbilt comes to mind), but most schools include at least a small loan ( Cornell, Emory, UVA, UNC). We found UNC to be accommodating to our specific situation while other schools were not. While UNC worked with us and gave us an immediate and favorable answer to a question, Princeton ( ended up not applying) responded with, “maybe- it depends.” Every family and situation is different.
Congrats on Columbia- I love it there!
Does anybody know when decisions are being released for the Chancellor’s Science Scholars Program?
The UNC CSS Facebook site says they were finishing up some interviews this week and trying to have out decisions within ten days. You can look over there and see the post. Good luck!
Does anyone received the offer in mail? I’m international from China, still haven’t got any mail. Is that normal?
Denied. 4.77 Weighted and 3.9 UW. 7 AP classes and 7 IB classes
Denied for what, @panda01?
Deferred OOS student here. Anyone in the same boat know when decisions will be released? Will probably go to Michigan unless I get some money, but still curious.
hi everyone! does anyone know how daily tarheel life is from an OOS non-Greek life perspective??
How are people getting decisions already? Are RD out? Thought it was around the 30th?
@cloudysmom They are talking about the results that came out for EA two months ago.
