UNC Class of 2021 EA

My D is an OOS non Greek and she loves it at UNC. What specifically would you like to know? She is home on break and I can ask her.

My D is also a non-Greek OOS student and she loves UNC. She is very involved in two different clubs on campus, she attends games, has a research position 12-15 hours per week, tutors, teaches some kind of “extra help” class on campus ( forgot the exact title), goes to the gym and does Pilates, and does her school work. She also sees a capella groups - I am sure there is more but I think I covered most.

@madredos omg that would be wonderful if you could ask her some questions for me! I heard that its hard to integrate into UNC being OOS, and also social life dwindles if you are not in a Greek house. I just wnated to know her experience with a) assimilating to southern culture (im from Boston) and b) making friends in such a large pool.

@twogirls wow what a awesome and busy schedule! it’s nice to hear some activites that OOS, Non-G Tar Heels are a part of. thanks you!

The scholarship D went in for Selection Day for had finalists 2/3 instate and 1/3 put of out of state. FYI.

@machiavelli1738 - I PM’ed you. But @twogirls and I feel very much the same way about UNC for our kids. It has been a win at our house too.

@machiavelli1738 we are also from the northeast. The transition was a little rough at first but it was not because of cultural differences-it was because she was nervous that a lot of the NC kids might know one another from HS ( given that it’s a state school). By mid October she found her niche and now she has friends from all over the country, plus many from NC.

She wants to study abroad next year but is now saying she loves her school so much that she does not know how she can possibly leave!

I got a question. So I just got my financial aid and I got the maximum amount you could get on a pell grant, another federal grant - the supplemental one, I got work-study, and also an OSAA grant that was 15,000 dollars - no loans. Does this mean I got Carolina covenant scholar? If so, then how will I be notified?

@machiavelli1738: I also have a non-Greek, OOS first-year student, who has not seemed to lack for a social life. Early in the Fall Semester there is a huge activities fair, where clubs and organizations have tables or booths; you will have the opportunity to engage with lots of different people if you choose to take advantage of some of these clubs and organizations. There are also off-campus music/dance venues in both Chapel Hill and the adjacent town of Carrboro for socializing. Additionally, even though my first-year is not a member of a sorority, she seems to get a fair share of invites to fraternity parties; so there should be opportunities in that regard if you want them. Finally, the abundance of IS students can work to your advantage: my daughter found her roommate (from Chapel Hill) on a Carolina 2020 Facebook page, and got linked in to an immediate group of friends through her roommate. Although at first it might seem that every student you meet is from Charlotte or Raleigh, you should quickly expand your acquaintances to encompass both IS and OOS students.

As far as the “southern culture” thing goes, Chapel Hill and Carrboro are a bit more progressive/tolerant than much of the rest of the state. I think you will find the local culture more similar to Boston than you might otherwise suppose.

Is there a Group me for UNC class of 2021 admitted students?

@nikkit21 I do not think so.

Does anybody know what the deadline is to accept or decline admission to UNC?

@InsatiableLeo726 May 1 I think

@gandalf78 okay thank you so much! I didn’t realize I could find another potential Boston down south, that’s great to hear!!

@machiavelli1738: Well, Chapel Hill isn’t exactly Boston; but I don’t think you will feel very much out of place there.

Did anyone else get a UNC OOS Assured Admission scholarship finalist email for the K-F school?

@sirhcgled I successfully appealed UNC for more grant aid for an OOS student. Had to submit additional documentation of why we needed more money. They were very willing to work with us as it is my D first choice school.

I know this is 2 months late. D was denied EA to UNC which had us a little concerned about RD decisions down the road… Happy to report she was accepted to Rice University yesterday which has a 14% admit rate – similar to OOS UNC students. Waitlisted at JHU last week (She also was accepted to Honors at Boston College and Honors at Northeastern in Chemistry). I suppose it’s somewhat the luck of the draw. Good luck to future UNC students!

@CTstrider CONGRATS on Rice (and the others)!!! We are in Houston and Rice is a fabulous school. Voted many times the happiest campus or something like that. Have many friends and business associates who graduated from Rice. It is in a nice area of Houston, there is tons to do. Big city but the campus feels like a campus. No greek system if that’s important but they have the “Harry Potter system” of houses which serves as a group and identity. Cannot say enough good things. Sadly our child wanted nothing to do with it since it is 10 minutes from our house!

Is anyone else frustrated with the financial aid office. They seem rude. I have tried to comply with everything they want and then they add more. I know it is a busy time of year but they are far from helpful. I still don’t have a package.
Accepted at State as well and they seem far more helpful. UNC is my first choice but I can’t make that decision until I know about finances.
