UNC Class of 2022 EA Discussion Thread

Does anyone know what time the decision comes out? Is it morning, afternoon, or night?

I saw in another thread the decision usually comes out after 4 pm the last Friday in January.

Waiting on UNC to see if I have to apply to the rest of my safeties… Whose deadline is Feb 1!! Yikes, anyone else lol?

@anxiouswreck, this is not a comment on your likelihood of admission because I have no info about you, but PLEASE make sure that all you have to do is hit “send” on your safeties. Even though it’s no fun to pay for them if you don’t need to, I’d send your test scores now to the safety schools with February 1 deadlines, and have any extra essays already written.

One of my friends who got finalist for an Execl@Carolina scholarship got the email that morning before admissions decisions were made available.

@dollarsigh Can’t give this great credibility, but among us NC governor’s school students we always talked about how UNC Chapel really likes governor’s school students, so maybe it’ll give an advantage in the process, maybe not

@katespeare so that would make the estimated decision release date January 26th this year?

I can not find the form we are supposed to fill out to self report mid year grades on ConnectCarolina. Can someone tell me how to find it?

@AWinkleInTime I guess so, but it has historically been later, like the 27th or 28th the last two years, which fits with Friday.

@suzy100 Thank you so much for your concern, I truly appreciate it! My 2 other safety schools accept self-reported SAT scores, and everything is already all set, do not worry  Waiting just in case I don’t have to pay an extra application fee. Already applied to my financial safety so I am totally in the clear, I think.

@Cpalm70 She was not a legacy. She had solid grades and a decent SAT score but she he an interesting story and lived in South Africa and attended an international school there for two years. I think it’s like winning the lottery when you get in as OOS. I don’t know that there is a formula. Good luck to you though. Let me know.

I think getting in OOS has two hurdles. The first is meeting the GPA/SAT requirement. The next hurdle is showing them that you are a fit for the school. @MayBlvyMomma has a daughter who showed it.

@MaybeUNC2022 They only want mid-year grades for deferred EA applicants. From the UNC FAQ:

“If they’re deferred, we’ll ask them to submit their mid-year grades when they’re available, and we’ll use those grades, along with their original application materials, to re-evaluate them with our Regular Decision pool.”

Does anyone know how many of the admitted OOS applicants are admitted for sports? Or are they not included in the early applicant pool?

I went to Tar Heel Girl’s State this past June for the 78th session. Does anyone know if that may play a big role in my admission? I know it isn’t quite Governor’s School, but it is pretty selective.

Good luck to everyone in the coming months. I want to add, though, for those possibly fazed thinking their test score won’t get them a look, three individuals who got admission OOS last year had ACT’s of 30,31, and 32. If you have something else that shines in your application, trust that it can bring you over the top. I quite dislike those who state that "If you don’t have above so and so ACT score, you’re not getting in OOS. Remember that UNC seeks to cultivate a community of unique individuals and not simply high test-takers. Just be confident in yourself and your abilities.

Thanks @katespeare and good luck everyone!

While I agree 100% that test scores are not everything, one still needs to be realistic. My D’s friend (OOS) got in with an ACT under 30… but she had several hooks. I agree that every single application is carefully and holistically reviewed…which may be part of the reason why the decisions are not released earlier. They really do look at the entire person… but… at the same time… they still have to abide by the legal caps imposed by the state… and there could be 25,000 OOS apps.

There are lots of great schools out there. Good luck!

My D15 got in OOS a few years ago, though she ended up choosing a different school due to a merit scholarship. S18 applied EA and has good stats (35 ACT/NMSF/3.9 out of 4.0). Would be great to hear this month but he has a music school audition at UNC late in the month and it is our understanding he will not hear back about general admission until he is evaluated by the music school. Good luck to all the applicants! UNC is an awesome school.

Vistajay, My OOS son auditioned on November 18th. After that and having applied by the October 15th early action deadline, January 30th feels like such a long time to wait! He is a percussion student. His only got a 32 on his ACT (33 super scored), and has a 97 GPA, and UNC is his top pick! Such a long shot but he just loves it!! What instrument does your son play?
