Does anyone know if being picked as a semi finalist for the Chancellor’s Science Scholars Program correlates with an acceptance? lol is that just wishful thinking?
I think it does…
@Cpalm70: I seem to recall seeing something posted (I don’t know the thread on the UNC forum) that OOS legacy acceptance rates were around 40%; I don’t know the source for that number, however. The UNC-CH website gives non-legacy OOS acceptance rates as 14%, here: http://admissions.unc.edu/apply/class-profile-2/ .
Yes. 18% is out of state quota. Out of which 40% goes to legacy students
@puhtatah Were you notified for an Excel@Carolina Scholarship?
@Pastpower I was emailed saying that I was a semi finalist for the CSS one and that I had to fill out a survey/write two essays to be considered as a finalist
Has anyone else been contacted lately by UNC?
@puhtatah Unfortunately, It is stated on the CommonApp that selection for an excel@carolina scholarship does not gaurantee admission.
@puhtatah My son received the same email this afternoon. At first I thought it was just a generic email, but it clearly states he is a semifinalist. I know it isn’t a guarantee that he’ll be admitted, but it must be a good thing. It says that they have reviewed his qualifications and the invitation is in response to that.
How helpful is it that both parents went to UNC, one undergrad, and one grad, as well as having an aunt and uncle attend undergrad. I am an OSS student
@puhtatah I would take the email as a good sign. Commonapp says interest in Excel doesn’t affect admissions. Since Excel is offered to the top 10% of admitted students (based on the website) I would guess you are in a good spot if they are even considering you at this stage…good luck!
@jfox41 youre a legacy. 40% of the admitted OOS students are legacies
If there are 2 OOS students with similar credentials and one is a legacy, that legacy applicant will get priority. UNC does value OOS alumni and the contributions they make in the world. I can’t find any statistics as to how many OOS students are legacies.
If I didn’t get an email about Excel yet, does that mean I’m out of the running?
@Tigr0705 I wouldn’t say that. UNC’s website does say that students normally find out about Excel@Carolina scholarships after admission; however, there are a few exceptions. Seemingly, Chancellor’s Science Honors is one of them. So no reason to worry unless you marked Chancellor’s Science Honors. It seems as if that program only so far has informed all of its finalists.
@Pastpower Hm, I did mark Chancellor’s Science Honors as one of mine. I’m pretty confident I would be in the top 10% of students as well. Do they send rejection emails about this?
@Tigr0705 Nope, they just send the emails to finalists because should someone not even get admission to UNC, it would be overkill to send rejection for Excel@Carolina. Honestly these programs are ridiculously hard to get no matter how qualified you think you are. Someone previously likened it to a lottery selection. It’s hard to know what they’re looking for in admisions regardless save these honors programs. Doesn’t mean anything against you or your abilities at all. Thousands upon thousands can probably most similar if not better stats.
I was pretty surprised to see the email for my son for the semi finalist for CSS. The email had actually gone to his junk mail and he hadn’t seen it! I was just telling him that I didn’t think he’d get into UNC as his stats aren’t crazy good. I did, however see that the CSS is tied strongly to diversity and he is URM. Anyway, will see how this plays out. At this point he needs to just see if he gets admitted in the first place.
We’ll see in a couple of weeks.
I just found this extremely detailed first-year profile. Hopefully it’s somewhat helpful (especially for those who had questions about oos legacies.) https://alumni.unc.edu/news-publications/other-publications/special-reports/admissions-article-archive-admissions-to-unc/charts/
Speaking of Excel opportunities, does anyone know if Honors College invitation is included with acceptance or does that come later (if it comes at all, of course)? My daughter is very highly qualified ISS who I know would love that opportunity at UNC and perhaps is even expecting it… But I think I read here or somewhere else that invites to Honors often come later as a separate communication? She also selected the Chancellor’s Science thing and didn’t get an email so it appears that’s out. . . Appreciate any 411!
