UNC Class of 2023 EA Discussion Thread

Judging from someone on another thread, I believe some schoarship emails have been sent already

@Hopeful271 I donā€™t think we know enough to assume that yet, but at this point I wouldnā€™t get your hopes up. Someone on another thread said that when they called, they were told that all Excel@Carolina decisions will be out by Monday, but a lot were sent out today. We just donā€™t know enough about their strategy of releasing them.

did anyone else receive an email about a fred morrison scholarship. i canā€™t find any info about it online

can someone receive assured admission into more than one Excel@Carolina program?

My son was notified this afternoon that he is a finalist for the Chancellorā€™s Science Scholars Program - which was very exciting. I guess I have the same question as breeeeee, could he also be asked to be a part of Honors Carolina?

@NCboymom Yes, he can receive more than one excel opportunity. If heā€™s a chancellorā€™s science scholar finalist thereā€™s a pretty high possibility heā€™s also in honors. Donā€™t quote me on that though.

@breeee @NCboymom - You can be in two programs, like @Pastpower said.

Does anyone know if any other merit information is forthcoming? Or does it seem that everyoneā€™s been notified by now?

Iā€™m Chancellorā€™s Science Scholar finalist, selected for EXCELerated Research scholar, and gratefully, Tar Heel Scholarship. Yet, I havenā€™t been notified acceptance to Honors Carolina, which I checked the box on my Common App. Is Honors Carolina all out? If so, what are some advantages over non-honors first-year students?

My son was a finalist for chancellor science scholarship. We attended the finalist weekend, but ultimately he wasnā€™t chosen. Itā€™s a wonderful program, but probably not a great fit for my son. He didnā€™t like the fact that they would all have to live together for at least the first year, plus they are brought in for about six weeks over the summer. He would have missed a huge family vacation had he been chosen. Ultimately it worked out the way it should have.

I was accepted out of state and I received an email saying I was awarded the Carolina Scholarship. Since Iā€™m OOS, it covers tuition, room and board, and fees. Needless to say Iā€™m exceedingly grateful and very likely to enroll as a Tar Heel in the fall

@andrea391 - As a non-Honors first year, you will still be allowed to take an Honors course or seminar if there is room available- an Honors student would be given a preference, thatā€™s all. You will be eligible to apply to the program (in case you donā€™t get in now) towards the end of your first semester. My friendā€™s daughter is doing this. I heard that you can email and ask to be considered even now, I believe thereā€™s a link on the Honors page to do the same, but I donā€™t actually know anyone who did that. Good Luck!

@Essel Do you maybe know if non-Honors Carolina students will also have the same study abroad opportunities?

To transfer students have a shot at any of these or are they just for incoming freshmen?

Hi! I was accepted at UNC and saw someone mentioned he or she had already created an email with your ONYEN. Did they send that to your regular email? My admissions letter didnā€™t have that info on it although I also got into NCSU and UNCW and both of them did have the login info. I read that we could begin to create the email on January 30, but I wasnā€™t sure whether or not we had to go ahead and confirm enrollment to get the ONYEN.

You do not have to enroll to create a onyen, Just got to connect Carolina and click forgot password and go through that Process.

@Ramen1 - What I do know, from comparing notes with my friend, the Study Abroad presentation was different with the Honors orientation. The programs covered were more specific, most of them led by UNC professors, so theyā€™d be a graded course, not pass/fail credit. What I also know, is that there was a separate SA event for Honors students just last week, where they were given info about grants available just for them, and guidance on which ones to apply to. I know the program my son is looking at, requires you to be a BME student in Honors. Not sure if thatā€™s the case with all Honors-led programs? I also remember that the Honors SA is not open for first years. Meaning, even if you were to not get in right now, you have the opportunity to apply in Dec, and still not miss out on much!

Are the scholarship, excel, and honors notifications coming in through your unc email account?

@juststaycool No, should be going to the email on file for your application

I still havenā€™t gotten my admissions decisions (OOS)! I received the email on Friday about a delay, but now Iā€™m not sure whatā€™s going on. Anyone else still waiting? I hope this doesnā€™t disqualify me from these merit scholarships.
