UNC, thus far

NCDanceMom,

If your daughter doesn’t want to drink at Carolina there are so many people that she could hang out with and have a great time. Joining a sorority is the WORST THING she could ever do in that regard. If she’s interested in philanthropy, sororities do have opportunities but I don’t understand why she wouldn’t join one of the many committees under the Campus Y.

Carolina isn’t for everyone for sure, but from what it sounds like your daughter has just been misguided.

Cloying,
Thanks for the advice on the Y. I will mention it to her.

When she decided to Rush, I was just pleased she was not giving up and still trying to find a fit. I didn’t realize (or maybe remember) that drinking was such a huge part of Greek life. I did drink alcohol while in college, however, the legal age was 18 (then 19 and then 21) so I was legal. I also did not drink at the Greek events as I was a designated walker - walking the drunken fools back to their dorms, keeping hair out of vomit, and sitting with them at night to ensure they were safe. I applaud her for not giving into peer pressure or changing her ways in order to fit in.

She is also going to check out the Ballroom Dance club and the Rec center. She will find her fit, it just may take longer than others. I keep my thoughts to myself but I believe she should transfer to a school with a dance program, major in dance maybe minor in chemistry, and get pre-requisites for medical school; graduate and apply to medical school. But it is not my decision nor my life to live.

NCDanceMom,

This may be not her cup of tea, but my D is involved with Helping Paws, which works to help local shelter animals find adoptive homes. She is a senior, not a drinker, and has found many great friends through this group.

almar4,

Thanks for this information. This is great! We have been very active in Animal Rescue and assisting with transportation animals from high kill shelters to safe rescues, fosters and/or forever homes. She is currently working on several fundraisers in our hometown area for the local humane societies and rescue organizations. I will definitely pass this on to her.

Thanks again.

NCDanceMom,
Glad to help ! Sounds like this might be great for her!!!

[Welcome to the Campus Y at UNC Chapel Hill](http://campus-y.unc.edu/)

Have your daughter check that page out - there are 18 (last time I checked) committees and each one focuses on one thing. Sophomore year, I wanted to get back into service, particularly with kids, and I was incredibly impressed with all of the Y.

Ballroom dance is also great, the people are really into it and I’m jealous of their mad skills.

Seriously, again, if she isn’t interested in drinking she needs to leave the sorority ASAP. And even though your D will feel like some great expanse of time has passed and that she can’t drop/add activities, she totally totally can.

Don’t hesitate to PM me if she’s still feeling weird!

NCDanceMom- I’m sorry to hear that about her sorority sisters. It’s certainly different at every sorority, but my sisters told us over and over in the car “There’s no pressure to drink.” (I think at least five different people told that to me) They provided cocktails and “mocktails” for us, so it was really nice that they were understanding. They totally don’t care either way. No one ever asked me if I was/wasn’t drinking.

Just jumping in to say I love Helping Paws (the girl who runs it is hilarious) and the people I know who do ballroom dancing LOVE it and are very into it. Could be right up her alley. The Campus Y is also great.

If she does do Helping Paws and wants to volunteer at the Orange County Animal Shelter, I know she has to do training and orientation and whatnot, and then you can carpool with people to go over there. I had to be persistent and hunt down a girl with a car who went to the shelter on a regular basis so I could tag along. It was worth it! : )

ArtemisDea, are you in KKG by any chance? It is the only sorority I have heard of that isn’t as big on drinking… But the vast majority are.

I also highly recommend zumba classes at the SRC - I have mad love for zumba. SO fun.

jambaby and all,
Thanks for the advice. I know she plans on looking up the Helping Paws. This would help her continue her service in Animal Rescue. Because of her class schedule this week, she actually came home for an unplanned long weekend. She was able to take dance at her old studio. She loved it and it showed in her face and demeanor. Dad is starting to reconsider letting her take her car so she can dance at a ballet school she found in Durham. I think going ‘cold turkey’ on dance has been the most difficult transition.

She is going to continue with the sorority. She likes the philanthropy and the events planned for the upcoming year. She is hoping to find girls that do not find it necessary to drink or get wasted to have a good time.

Thanks again.

NCDanceMom

Glad to hear she seems to be doing better !
