Undecided STEM girl with non-perfect stats

SUNY ESF’s website (https://www.esf.edu) says that ESF and Syracuse U share a campus! https://www.esf.edu/welcome/esfsu.htm

@TTG this is a typical conversation with her about the future:

xxx what do you want to do with your life?

Hike the North-South trail in Sweden

OK, that’s not where I was going with that question…

Not sure of merit aid options but covering the STEM, city, outdoors, and LGBT-friendly would be Seattle University.

@VickiSoCal That’s a seriously great plan. At that age I had a book with all 284 of the Munros in Scotland to tick off. Then spent my college years caving, climbing and backpacking through various mountain ranges

Well, then, she should learn some Swedish!

Possibilities (not all of which are likely to be affordable, estimated costs before any aid)
Augustana College (IL) ~$55k
Gustavus Adolphus College ~$55k
Minnesota State University (Mankato) ~29k
Ohio State University ~$48k
Portland State University ~$8k
University of Arizona ~$52k
University of Colorado-Boulder ~$55k
University of Illinois ~$50k
University of Maryland ~$51k
University of Massachusetts ~$50k
University of Minnesota ~$45k
University of Oregon ~$50k
University of Pittsburgh ~$45k
University of Washington Seattle ~$53k
University of Wisconsin – Madison ~$54k
University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee ~35k

Academically out of reach:
Columbia University
University of California – Berkeley
University of California – Los Angeles
University of Michigan
University of Pennsylvania
University of Texas at Austin
Washington University in St. Louis

Not LGBT friendly:
Brigham Young University

I second DU over CSU for Colorado schools, Denver is a more interesting city.

Another outdoorsy STEM major is Geoscience.

@ucbalumnus Her UC stats are:

Unweighted GPA: 3.63
Weighted GPA: 4.50
Weighted and Capped GPA: 4.13

She had A’s/B’s 14 weighted semesters

10th- 9/2
11th- 1/4 (will change to 2/3 if she gets a 5 in APUSH. no other classes bump up)

So I’m not thinking that will go up, rather down if second semester is similar to first…

I’m going to throw out an alternative possibility, based on your comments about her hiking. It’s not a STEM option.

Before doing so, I’ll add that one of mine has done some very serious, world class hiking in the last year or so, very much akin to what your daughter was talking about. And it seems cool to me. And another, a very, very strong math student, with ADD and dysgraphia, has spent the last couple of years working outdoors.

Anyway, we know someone who took some time before college and had some major league outdoors/hiking accomplishments. They went on to Prescott College in AZ. They focused on wilderness leadership, medicine, etc. and spent most of their college years in the biggest mountain ranges in the Americas. Really a fantastic, unique experience. And they are doing great and are employed in what they love. It’s extremely small. Not for everyone, and certainly not the option for someone looking to go into engineering or looking to do data analytics on Wall Street (though anything is possible). Prescott is a great little town and probably has the best weather in AZ, right between the heat of Phoenix and the cold winters of Flagstaff. At least give it a peek; it’s fun to see what’s out there in the wide world.

https://www.prescott.edu

When I was 13.our vw van broke down in Prescott and we were stranded for a day. I imagine it has changed.

If we assume the same grades and courses second semester of 11th grade, then the record will be:

10th: 9 A, 2 B
11th: 2 A, 8 B

That makes for a 3.52 unweighted GPA (74 grade points, 21 grades), 3.90 weighted-capped GPA (+8 honors points), and 4.19 fully weighted GPA (+14 honors points) at the end of 11th grade. The weighted-capped GPA should be the one to compare with UC information unless otherwise specified (as unweighted or fully weighted).

Isn’t Prescott also the college that’s taking the Green Mountain College students in the wake of that closure? So it may be growing a little.

Ohio State’s cost would come down to under $40K if she’s top 25% of her class and at least 29/1330 on ACT/SAT - automatic National Buckeye scholarship. http://undergrad.osu.edu/cost-and-aid/merit-based-scholarships

Purdue is just over $40K out of state and top 10 USNews if she’s truly looking at Engineering (my daughter’s a sophomore there). The other programs probably aren’t as strong (other than business).

(neither is going to check the skiing box)

MHC is isolated with just a small village. It’s a bus ride to Northampton or Amherst.

I’m of the opinion that getting the cost down to 40K for Smith or MHC will be extremely unlikely.

@ucbalumnus I think it is better than that as she will have 19 weighted semesters after this one. 14 + 5

And I think she will get a 5 on APUSH for at least 2 more A’s (moves to A’s at a 5 and 1 A at a 4)

But either way I think she is solid for UCSC and that is her favorite UC. Trees! No football! Sailing!

No or little football may be the only thing her and her sister agreed on.

In that more optimistic scenario, it looks like the UC GPAs would be 3.619 unweighted, 4.000 weighted-capped, 4.523 fully weighted, based in 76, 84, and 95 grade points for 21 semester grades.

March SAT is in. 800 math, 720 ebrw, about what I thought she would do

Campus Pride index at Sewanee: https://www.campusprideindex.org/searchresults/display/715732

I know it is an irrational prejudice but she says the South is right out. Sigh.

A’s in all 5 classes second semester of junior year. That’s AP Chemistry, AP Calc AB, AP Physics 1, AP Lang, APUSH
All B’s except Physics first semester.

So that brings us to:

Academic GPA according to school is:

W- 4.64 U- 3.76

SAT 1520
Math 2 790

Several scores pending

She is still very undecided where to apply. And undecided whether to take SAT again.

Roger Hub says UC GPA is

Unweighted GPA: 3.76
Weighted GPA: 4.57
Weighted and Capped GPA: 4.14

You all were so much help. Final results (she did not apply to UK after all):

Applied to and admitted at all six, still undecided where to go:

Berkeley
UC Santa Cruz
Willamette (35 K merit/year )
Mount Holyoke (15K merit/year plus first year 2k)
UNM (Amigo scholarship and first year 2K, makes it the cheapest)
Colorado School of Mines (12 K merit/year)

No decision yet other than cost ruling out CSOM and MHC (which I floated due to this thread and she fell in love with but thankfully never visited, so hopefully she can get over it)
