Undeclared Major

My daughter is considering applying ED to Dartmouth or Pomona in November. She has not decided on a major and is wondering if Dartmouth is a good fit for someone who is undecided. She is somewhat interested in Economics, International Relations or Biology. Do you think Dartmouth is a good environment to explore different career paths?

My son, a Dartmouth '19, also entered undeclared. He honed in on something he plans to major in pretty quickly, but even if he hadn’t, the distributive requirements ensure that students take a wide range of courses along the way. There are a lot of requirements, but the upside is that you have to sample a little of everything!

I have the impression that Econ courses can be hard to get into due to high demand, but that may be true only/mainly for post-intro level. What @b1ggreenca said about distrib was my immediate reaction as well. And one of the nice things about the quarter system is that she could sample more areas in the first year than the semester system would allow.

As a liberal arts institution, Dartmouth embraces students who are open minded and still searching for their academic passion. It is not expected that you declare a major until the end of your sophomore year.
