Undeclared?

Is university of Rochester good for an undeclared major? Do they have a wide variety of majors and can you take different classes in different fields till you figure out what you want to major in?

You don’t declare your major until sophomore year, and students are encouraged to try out all sorts of different classes - it’s a main part of the philosophy at UR. Engineering students probably need to get on their track right away though.

Click on the “Academics” tab on the UR website for a list of majors.

Engineering students have a template to use as a guide in their class selection. Their curriculum is pretty packed but there is still room for an extra class on most semesters. UR does have a lot of flexibility in course selection but it is still wise to try and select courses that would meet a cluster requirement since students other than engineering ones have to meet the 3 cluster requirement of 3 classes each.

Many are crosslisted in more than one area though so there still is a lot of options and students are able to minor or double major more easily.

Actually, there are only 2 clusters required of a student with a single major; the major covers the other area of study (humanities, social science and math & natural sciences).

My mistake :). My son is in Engineering so only has one cluster plus a 4 th class in either humanities or social science.
