Yes, I see all sorts of hope for the under 3.6 crowd in the ED results.

Hard to describe interesting of course, I guess either you are or you aren’t.

Congrats, northwest mom & son! I visited Colgate with my S and remember that the campus was stunning, and everyone was very friendly.

Out of curiosity, how were your S’s SAT/ACT scores?

My s’s scores were
3.6 unweighted, 4.0 weighted
top 30% (ugh) very, very competitive hs
750 m 740 w 690 cr
9 aps total
lots of ec though

jackpot, that’s the best news I’ve heard all day. Very encouraging. Nice job!

My son’s list of top-20-ish schools continues to evolve. Now it’s down to four: Stanford, WashU, Rice, and Rochester. But two of my son’s friends, with similar test scores and better grades, were just rejected by Stanford after applying restrictive EA, so my son is less than optimistic. Still, he’s going for it, although I’m not sure why; I think it may be as simple as the fact that a girl he has a crush on is applying there and will probably be admitted. Dum-da-dum-dum…DUUUUUMB. But I told him I’d help him apply to the super-reach school of his choice, and I don’t welsh, so here goes $90 down the ol’ commode.

His reasons now break down (as best I can tell) as follows:

Stanford: It’s prestigious, plus the girl thing.
WashU: School nominated him for Danforth Scholars, so Mom and I said he’d d*** well better apply.
Rice: Residential college system sounds really nice.
Rochester: Open curriculum is very attractive, plus application is free due to Bausch & Lomb Award last year.

This is finals week, and his sub-3.6 GPA continues to appear poised to go even farther sub-3.6. I can see his grades online, and I’m betting on 2 A’s, 3 B’s, and 2 C’s. Now, his school is tough, and 3.0 is respectable, but I don’t think any school is so tough that a 3.0 makes one Stanford material. At this point I’m worried that he won’t even make National Merit Finalist, and I was really hoping for at least one automatic full ride to fall back on (from Alabama or Ole Miss).

My son too is applying to Rice, Vandy, CMU etc with 3.5 GPA. Keeping fingers crossed GTech comes out soon.

Stanford is on the list too.

I think Vandy is great. I like the whole “Southern Ivy” vibe, but that’s just me. My son is more attracted to…well, at this point I’m not sure what. Girls who might get into Stanford, I guess.

GTech would be awesome. Good luck.

Congratulations to all those who’ve had their T20 dreams come true. Looks like, at least on the ED front, some of our “blind chicks” really just needed some strong glasses.

Thinking out loud for sanity’s sake…

My son has three finals today. Actually, he’s in the third one as I type this. Going into finals, which are 20% of the semester grade, he had two A’s, one B, three C’s, and an incomplete. Not exactly top-20 material, as previously noted.

He called me this morning to tell me that, after turning in a mad flurry of late work, extra credit, and today’s final exam, his incomplete has become an A! This is a class he was in danger of failing not long ago. The teacher assigns absolutely TONS of work, as if it’s the only class these kids are taking, but apparently he understands this well enough to allow late work to be turned in without excessive penalties. I should say “obviously” because that’s the only way my son could possibly have pulled out an A in that class. The teacher used to teach at one of the UC’s, and he proudly points out that he has not dumbed the class down at all for his high schoolers. I wonder if his grad students were allowed to turn stuff in late. Anyway, I can’t deny that these kids finish the class knowing their stuff inside and out.

But even three A’s, one B, and three C’s are not exactly top-20 material, so I continue to hope that he hits a home run on his exams and manages to pull out something close to a 3.5 GPA for the semester. I’m afraid that, if he doesn’t, the money spent on top-20 applications will be wasted.

Biting my nails for the next two days…

I wish him (and you and your nails) well. I really think you had a smart approach getting those acceptances under his belt.

^^^
Good Luck MS. Seems like you’re son is more of a “test” kind of guy than a “Homework” kind, so you may be in luck.

Thank you so much!

Without a doubt. Thank goodness for the PSAT, SAT, and ACT, because his grades are pretty inconsistent.

My D just got her ED admission to Pomona, so it’s another T20 if you count LACs! I haven’t been too chatty on this thread because my D does have a little bit of a hook. She had support from a coach, but at Pomona that by no means guarantees admission. I gather it’s a lot like having an extra recommendation. Since the coach support was to a great extent based on the coach’s impression of what a strong application my D would submit, we’ll never know if the recommendation made much difference. But however it transpired, here’s another very happy high-scoring medium GPA kid who made it into her dream school!

Awesome. Congrats!

S2 got his acceptance at UChicago this afternoon. Big celebration here!

CountingDown, WOW, Congrats to your S for UChicago!

(I just wish that I could have predicted it 6 hours in advance, like you did for my S…)

CD BIG Cong!!! on Chicago. So, it can happen!!!

Congratulations CountingDown (and everyone). My S2 is not applying to UChicago, must admit I’m a little disappointed, as is his brother who currently attends. He is applying only to warmer weather schools. Nothing in the east.

Congratulations everyone! This thread sure has a good batting average.

Hey, don’t give somebody else credit for my Soothsaying <g>. Or did CD predict it too?</g>

Congrats to FauxNom’s D! Pomona had the best cafeteria of all the schools I had a chance to visit. Great looking facility and the food and the presentation of it looked to be restaurant quality!
