Under 3.6 (GPA) and Applying Top 20 Parents Thread

Pomona and Chicago, very impressive! Congratulations. (And yes, LACs certainly do count!)

Praise the LORD!!!

Son got accepted to University of Chicago! There is hope afterall for our under 3.6 kids! I got the news on my way home from the airport. Almost had to pull to the side just to let it sink in.

I see CD’s S also got in to UChicago, and FN’s D to Pomona. Congrats! Congrats! Celebration is indeed in order.

As the OP, you deserve extra-special congratulations for this accomplishment!!! I’m picturing your son exiting the Rockefeller Chapel and walking onto campus, being cheered by his new friends and colleagues. I hope the finances and other considerations work out, and that this becomes reality!

Congrats to PaperChaserPop and PaperChaserSon.

There has been a lot of good Top 20 news on the ED/EA decision front! There is hope for students with high test scores and rigorous programs and 3.6 and below GPAs.

Congrats, and thanks! I just knew some of these kids would be great for U Chicago. Fantastic news for both counting down and PC Pop! Isn’t it a huge relief?

Congrats PCP! I still hope for further good news for everyone, but it appears that this will be a good thread for all the naysayers to read in the future.

CONGRATS to everyone!!!

Congrats to PaperChasePop and Counting Down!!!

My son got deferred to U of Chicago and, believe it or not, we are thrilled (okay, not as thrilled as if he had gotten in but still…he has another shot! That’s great news in my mind. I was prepared for a denial.) His stats aren’t bad but they definitely aren’t over the top. 3.8 WA out of 5.0, 3.2 UWA , ACT 31, top 30 percentile of class, very few EC’s but is a NMSF, very rigorous private HS. The #1 kid in the class got in and the other three who applied (including son) got deferred.

He’s going to submit another essay and some of the articles he has written for the school paper. Any other suggestions would be great.

Most importantly, I do think this thread is proof-positive that you shouldn’t be dissuaded from applying to your reach school! Thank you, PCP, for starting it. It’s been a great source of support for months.

Again, congrats to everyone who got in.

and I would add: who write strong, personal essays, who know themselves, and target schools where their unique profile will be respected and celebrated.

It also works for any student applying to college (or for a job).

^^ funny you should mention that , CD. DH, while just starting a 3-4 mo contracting gig, got an additional FT job offer today. Things are looking up all teh way around!!
Congrats, CD!!! (and back to college congrats in general-- didn’t mean to go off on a tangent)

I agree with that! Selecting the right schools is very important, for this group of students, and for others as well.

Fabulous! Congrats, PaperChaserPop and PaperChaserSon - and CountingDown and CountingDownSon! So … you guys going to get together come next fall at move-in time??

Add my kid to the list of Chicago admits.

Happy that they overlooked the B- (or was it a C+?) in Chem as a freshman, and all those B-'s in Latin. I liked his essays very much, thought the main one was risky, but if they got it they’d probably think it was funny. I loved his why Chicago essay which sounded just like him.

Since he hasn’t seen the school he isn’t making any decisions now. He’s so funny - he said he wanted to wait till spring to see it at it’s best. Doesn’t want to repeat his experience of touring Bard on a gloomy, icy February day!

Wow! Congrats! Want me to go run down to Hyde Park and pick up some sweatshirts for all of you? :-)

wonderful to hear there will be several new U Chicago parents (provided that your kids want to matriculate there).

Congrats!!!

My freshman S1 came back for the winter break, and he is bubbly happy as ever.

I have the feeling that their acceptance rate is going to drop significantly with the application number shooting through the roof (this year’s EA’s number went up by 54%). I told S1 that he was lucky that he is the class of 2013: may not have made it if the competition last year had been as tough  Your kids had tough competition. All the more reason for you to be proud.

Hope to see you on the U Chicago forum. I “drop by” there a few times a week to see what’s going on, and I have to say, there is something “quirky” about the adults and senior students who are posting there  It’s either “the apple do not fall far from the tree” or “insanity is hereditary. we get it from our children” kind of a thing.

If any one of you has any questions, PM me.

Thanks to all. The acceptance was definitely a much needed relief. Congrats to mathmom and mathson! I counted three Chicago admits on this thread already!

Pizzagirl, sweatshirts sound great ;).

MomLive, hang in there. My son got deferred at Caltech three days ago, so I know the feeling. Encourage your son to turn in as good a report card as he can this semester. Consider retaking the ACT or the SAT in January – I think for RD, many colleges still take Jan SAT.

I have been following this thread from the beginning and seeing these fantastic results I feel so happy and proud of all of you and your kids. Way to go!!!

Congrats, PCP. I have been following this thread for months and really happy to see the good news pouring in.

This is the last day of finals, and I would just like to say AAAAAAAAAARGH!!!

journey919 & BMD, thanks. I’m sure the parents here still need quite a bit of encouragement and support moving forward.

DS1 got deferred at MIT yesterday. This hit him (& mom & dad) pretty hard since MIT is still his #1 choice. I’m grateful that the U Chicago acceptance from two days ago really helped us cushion the blow. In fact, DS1 is finding U Chicago more and more interesting. It is certainly very strong in his field of interest, and I must say U Chicago did a very good job on its website to network all the recent admits.

We’ve now heard back from 3 of his 4 EA schools. One acceptance, two deferrals. Still waiting for the snail mail from Notre Dame. We should also be hearing from Oxford soon.
