Does anyone know what is considered under represented? I am Middle-Eastern and Ashkenazi and I’m not sure what is considered under represented. (this is for BS in the northeast of USA)
I think it might depend on whether you were born in the ME and have strong cultural ties or if you are basing this on a looser affiliation.
Truthfully, I don’t believe being Jewish is considered URM, even if your origin is half Middle Eastern Jew and half European Jew.
I think highlighting diversity is always good. That said, I do not think Middle Eastern/Ashkenazi is considered an underrepresented minority.
No, probably not. You might talk about about cultural affinity as part of an essay Etc but you more likely statistically over represented than under represented at bs.
This is Stanford’s definition, which is pretty universal for colleges and boarding schools:
How much of an admissions bump, if any, URM has depends on the school, unless prohibited by state law.
In addition to the list above, here are some other groups which are considered URM:
Non-American Africans (of black ancestry)
Asians from Japan, Laos, Nepal, Bhutan
Australian aborigines
Canadian first nations
Alaskan native americans (Inupiat, Athabascans, Aleuts, etc)
Whether any school will consider them as such for admissions purposes will vary greatly. And I included native Alaskans in my earlier list.
