Undergrad choices for a major while studying stem cells.

I plan on attending graduate school to become a medical doctor and to gain a PhD in regenerative medicine to conduct research as well. My particular interest is adult pluripotent stem cells and political science when dealing with human rights (overall) and stem cells. I have begun to primarily look at state schools and I need to decide to apply as transfer or stay at community and apply as a transfer (currently taking a gap year with a few local college classes). What schools are great for research with classes based primarily around stem cell technology and genetics? Thank you.

Where do you live? Do you realize that paying out-of-state tuition at public schools costs as much as private schools?

That said, most large state universities will have strong biology programs, but you need to be realistic. You will still have to take basic courses, and get some academic credentials under your belt before you will be granted a research position.

So if you’re serious about doing research, I’d recommend you transfer as quickly as possible. At many large schools, it may be difficult for an undergrad to do research, especially in a specialized area: those positions are often meant for graduate students.

So the earlier you can start meeting professors, and establishing academic contacts that will help you land these positions, the earlier you will find yourself in the research lab doing things other than lab work for your required bio/chemistry weed-out courses…

I live in Florida, and yes, I do realize out of state tuition could cost as much as private school tuition. I was wondering if anyone knew a specific school with a specific program that would benefit me. I was researching schools, and discovered California State University Northridge has a honors program with required research where the student gets to pick the research topic. They participate in research dealing with stem cells. The closest school to me, that is also in state, is University of Central Florida with a biotechnology program that is closest to what I am wanting to study in college in Florida. UF and FSU do not specialize in the research I am wanting to study. I have considered University of Minnesota at Twin Cities, Arizona State University and Pennsylvania State University. All have a developmental biology program, or a genetics cell biology base with a masters in experimental surgery or stem cell biology that I could gain while I graduate as an undergraduate.

Look into U Rochester. Their undergrads are heavily involved in research. A quick google search found this:
