UNDERGRAD - OXFORD vs HARVARD/PRINCETON/YALE

Hey guys,

Just ot let you all know, I ended up taking Oxford over Princeton. I felt that the oppertunity to take courses at the Business School (the Said School) in addition to the Economics courses would allow for better and broader prospects. I talked to a few other peopl in the States who also said that at the Undergrad level, business courses would be valued a lot and be seen as an advantage over those who have just done Economics. I would really appreciate opinions if anyone wants to share. Thanks again.

Yay! See you there. :)
addy - are you applying next year, or do you have a school already picked? I think it's essential for Americans to go to one of the interview sessions they hold in the US; it gives you an advantage over the "paper" applicants and puts you on the same level as all the students from GB. Otherwise you have to be reeeeally accomplished to stand out and get accepted. That was actually one of the main reasons I chose Oxford over Cam - Cambridge did not provide interviews for internationals and I thought that would dampen my chances quite a bit.

As for formal dress - I think it's the coolest thing ever. You can't come closer to feeling like you're at Hogwarts. :b I might even have to stop by the Great Hall (aka Christ Church) after exams to get the full effect.

awww have a greaat time at oxford!

is it hard to get into oxford? im interested but i have no idea how close i am and what the admission standards are
ive heard they dont look TOO much at gpa, which is a really good thing for me
im a junior right now
gpa: 3.4 (freshman year was a 3.1, brought down a lot)
sat1:2340
sat: 760 760 760
ap: 5 5 4
if they really dont look at gpa's so much, what chances do i have?

you need a hard class schedule, and as many good APs as possible in subjects relevant to your course. If you have all these, then having a real passion for your subject that you can show at interview will be the deciding factor that gets you in. SATs will be considered but are not hugely important, yours are easily satisfactory.

As my daughter has received offer to do undergrad study in Oxford (Engineering/Economics/Mgmt) vs. Harvard and Stanford. She is looking to do a combination of Management Science & Engineering and Economics in either of the univs.

What would be the best choice? Being an international candidate, financial aid is not an option so that is no consideration. However, given the dismal job situation for international candidates...that might be one factor to consider.

Please do provide advice and feedback on what worked out for you?
thanks so much in advance....

My child will be in the unusual circumstance of having only one or two APs because the school does not offer any. Instead, students take courses at a good university as high school juniors and seniors. Will Oxford look reasonably well on this? Would , say, a B in a 300 level math course carry some weight there?
We'll do whatever it takes to get to an interview - I've read that Oxford may be trying some sort of online webcam system.

Princeton is near NYC. Reason enough to go to Princeton!

Oxford is trying out a webcam system. I received a webcam interview interview via Skype and received an acceptance to study PPE at Oxford/Teddy Hall. The "standardized" tests offerred by Oxbridge can help demonstrate a comparability between students in the UK and the US, but I believe that the interview is perhaps the most crucial element of the application process. Good luck!

chaat, just out of curiosity, how rigorous is Stanford? How many hours a day do you spend on h/w?

Don't be deceived by admission rates statistics. Oxford and Cambridge are just as hard to get into as Princeton, Harvard etc. The schools emphasize on different areas students' applications and you'll find that many people accepted at Princeton would not get admission into Oxbridge and vice versa.

A brilliant piece on the differences between Yale (read, for the most part: HYP) and Oxbridge.

[Yale Daily News - What?s better: Oxford?s depth or Yale?s breadth?](http://www.yaledailynews.com/scene/scene-cover/2010/04/23/whats-better-oxfords-depth-or-yales-breadth/)

How did you get accepted to Oxford and Princeton? those are my two schools i want to go too. What are your grades? Did you take honor classes/play sports? What did you include in the admissions essay?
