Undergraduate Computer Science?

Apart from the obvious schools -- MIT, Cal Tech, CMU -- none of which we can realistically afford, what other Universities have notable UG programs in Computer Science? Our HS sophomore son seems interested in that field of study (and possibly in business/accounting, too). Do any LACs (preferably in the midwest) have well regarded programs? Every school seems to offer computer science classes or even a major, but I haven't found much information on which schools truly have top programs.

Thanks for any suggestions. Assume that he would be a realistic candidate for admission at any school, even those listed above.

UIUC has an awesome Computer Science/Engineering program and it's not hard to get in like those you mentioned.

UW Madison has a top 10 dept and as of now it's not crowded at all. Google and Microsoft are both opening labs in Madison to take advantage of the UW talent--both profs and students.

UW is in-state and clearly the default (and a very good one) and I was aware of UIUC's reputation, although I understand OOS admission is getting extremely tough at UIUC.

Any others? Does anyone know how good Case Western's Comp Sci program is?

Purdue and Case Western both have strong computer science programs, but as to how good I am not sure.

If your son is at all interested in the west coast, Harvey Mudd, Stanford, and Berkeley have amazing CS programs (although all three are expensive).

This thread has the Gourman Report rankings and the Rugg's Recommendations for CS:

Neither of them are perfect ranking systems, e.g. the Gourman Report is very old, and of course you should not go solely by rankings, but they give an idea of schools that have some reputation for CS

Thanks; that was very helpful.

how would you rate Michigan Ann Arbor for computer science engineering

It's either computer science or computer engineering. They are very different--one is mostly software and the other hardware.

Georgia Tech.

Side note: UIUC OOS isn't that tough, especially if he's in the running for MIT. Plus they have early action, so you can find out if you got in in December :D

(Both UIUC and CMU give merit scholarships...CMU gave me a half tuition merit scholarship, so don't rule it out just yet!)

UW-Seattle has a #6 ranked computer science program. It has the advantage of being in the backyard of Microsoft and gets a lot of funding from it. The department is housed in the Paul Allen Center.

UDub also has an excellent accounting program, especially in taxation.
