I'm hoping to become a filmmaker someday. What are your thoughts on an undergraduate film degree?

I've read that it's better to go to graduate school for film rather than getting an undergraduate degree. Rather than getting a BA in film, choosing a broader undergrad major like psychology/sociology/literature/history might be better help you gain a bigger perspective which will help you in your storytelling. Plus, those majors are better if you want to get a job in the meantime.

Of course, getting into the film industry varies for every filmmaker, but I just wanted to get your ideas/thoughts on this.

I’m wondering the same. I’m currently going for broadcasting because if I never make it to film/TV, at least I have the production skills to get broadcasting jobs. There really are opportunities for that if you’re willing to look. Double majoring might not be a bad idea to get background in those areas, but I would think you would need to have some kind of production background to get into graduate schools, wouldn’t you?

I’m all for following dreams, though! If you have the determination you can get anywhere. You just have to be willing to be open minded, do anything, go anywhere…

Do you mind sharing the articles you read? I’d love to learn more info. about what ‘they’ say :D

Heyy! Looks like we’re in the same boat. I figured I should double-major in film studies and sociology, but I’m concerned about the potential workload. Since I’m going to CC for the first two years, I will need a strong GPA to transfer.

I’m currently reading “The Reel Truth” because I would like to explore more independent/experimental filmmaking. I read another book “Film School Confidential” that talks about different highly regarded film schools in very fine detail.

aerozeppelin, I think there is truth to there being advantages to getting a graduate film degree after pursuing something more “enriching” as an undergrad. However, you would also want to look at the financial aspect of that. I’m sure you know that you will not walk out of school (undergrad or grad) with a job if you have a film degree. Will you need to take out student loans? If so, how will you pay for them after graduation? It would be a shame to have all the education to be a wonderful filmmaker, yet be forced to take any job that pays the most money to pay those loans off.
